Kathleen Irene Paterka fell in love with writing (and food) at a very young age. By the time she graduated high school, she'd completed her first manuscript and she weighed 300 lbs. Though the extra pounds have long since disappeared, Kathleen still carries the emotional scars of being a former fatty. FATTY PATTY was born from the cruel teasing she endured on the school playground.

Great debut novel!

I empathized with Patty from the first page to the last. The ice cream scene was painfully familiar to me. Patty's not a perfect heroine, and not always pretty - in her thoughts or her actions - but always entertaining. There was a lot of depth in this debut novel and a lot of emotion. I especially admired Patty's determination, and I rooted for her all through the book. The ending is one of the best I've read. It's a terrific debut and I'm looking forward to the next James Bay novel.

Fatty Patty

What a lovely story. Like Patty I have struggled with my weight my whole life. It tells you that love is more important then anything else in the world no matter what your size. I love that there are other books about James Bay and look forward to the next one. What a wonderful summer story. Thank you Ms. Paterka.

A Gritty Life-Like Read

Growing up "the fat sister" I can relate to Patty in so many ways. It is hard when you see yourself as something different. Sam is such a great character and reminds me so much of my own husband. He is the perfect man who sees Patty as the wonderful beautiful person she truly is. Fatty Patty is a great debut book and although I will say there were times I wanted to put it down because I saw a bit too much of myself in Patty I kept reading in the hopes that Patty would see herself differently. Patty descends into to some dark places, for lack of a better description.
