Please note the real title of this book is Needlework Masterpieces: 20 Projects from the World's Greatest Museums
By Jane in Milwaukee
It's important to note that the true title of this book is Needlework Masterpieces: 20 Projects from the World's Greatest Museums because Melinda Coss is a very prolific author and you may think, if you don't see the cover, that this is a second book of hers. I wouldn't think it's so important if it were a great book. But especially since I don't, I wouldn't want to waste my money.

I've owned this book for a long time. I wish I could tell you the projects are worthwhile but not for me. I wish I could upload scans from the book showing a few of the projects, the original picture and the pattern but, alas, Amazon no longer allows for customer images on books. Believe it or not, the cover project is by far the best one in the book as far as looking like the original painting. But up close, it's really not that good. I'd skip this one.

This is a wonderful book of Needlepoint Masterpieces copied from museums. I do not feel that it is a book for the novice needleworker. The patterns are very complicated with many color changes and are large pieces when finished. The patterns themselves are wonderful. The Last Supper, the Mona Lisa, Waterlilies, Sunflowers, Angles, and ballerinas just to name a few. To the experienced needlecrafter, this book will make your hands itch just to get started on a new project. Fantastic book!

One Day It'll All Make Sense, by Common

From the hip hop icon, Hollywood star, and “a true artist and writer of deep talent” (James McBride, author of The Color of Water)—a candid, New York Times bestselling memoir ranging from his childhood on Chicago’s South side and his emergence as one of rap’s biggest names.

Common has earned a reputation in the hip-hop world as a conscious artist by embracing themes of love and struggle in his songs. His journey toward understanding is rooted in his relationship with a remarkable woman, his mother.

Common holds nothing back in this gripping memoir, both provocative and funny. He tells what it was like for a boy with big dreams growing up on the South Side of Chicago. He reveals how he almost quit rapping after his first album sold only two thousand copies. He recounts his rise to stardom and talks about the challenges of balancing fame, love, and family. Through it all, Common emerges as a man in full. Rapper. Actor. Activist. But also father, son, and friend. His story offers a living example of how, no matter what you’ve gone through, one day it’ll all make sense.

Review
"Common has written a magnificent memoir. It states that it is a book about his fascinating life. That is true. More importantly, his story is the story of all young people trying to grow up. His saga reminds the reader that love liberates and poverty cripples. Common writes beautifully, like the poet he is."

-Maya Angelou

Common distinguishes himself here as a true artist and a writer of deep talent. This book is the story of an artist in constant evolution, one who embodies the strength of the brilliant woman that raised him, the love of the Southside Chicago land that spawned him, and the raw spirit of the pro basketball player who fathered him. I've always heard that the people of Southside Chicago were special. I'm glad their native son Common shows us why. --James McBride Author of "The Color of Water"

"A thoughtful and beautiful book that tells us much more about Common... His mother's perspective takes this to another level." -Toure, author of "Who's Afraid of Post-Blackness"

"Raw in its honesty, profound in its insights, "One Day It'll All Make Sense "establishes Common as a voice that is as compelling on the page as it is on a record. This is not simply the story of an individual artist but a crucial page the history of hip hop itself." -Jelani Cobb, author of "The Substance of Hope"

"A powerful memoir that speaks to all audiences." -Queen Latifah

"Common is a 360-degree human being, and I don't say that about many people. He never needed to "pimp the hood" to achieve his deserved success. He is an eloquent and honorable role model and his memoir is a perfect example of his depth as a human being. In addition, reading about his childhood and upbringing in Chicago is really a trip - because we went through so many of the same experiences albeit decades apart. Chicago is still the roughest and primary "Institution of Hard Knocks," and if you can make it there, you can truly make it anywhere!" -Quincy Jones

PROLOGUE

Dear Reader:

When I was eighteen months old, my mother and I were kidnapped at gunpoint. My father held the gun.

At least that’s one side of the story. I first heard about it all from my aunt long after it happened, when I was already a grown man. I asked my mother, and she told it to me one way. I asked my father, and he told it to me another. The story I’ll tell you begins where my mother’s and my father’s tales come together and continues past them into the separate corners of my parents’ truths. Somehow in telling it, the story becomes my own. Somehow in telling it, it all starts to make sense.

My father, Lonnie Lynn, was a Chicago playground legend. They called him the Genie because he’d make the basketball disappear right before your eyes then make it reappear at the bottom of the net. At six foot eight, he had NBA size and the skills to match. He was nice around the rim and had a sweet stroke from inside eighteen feet. But he talked back to coaches. He missed practice. He developed a habit. He was out of the league before his career really began. For all his gifts, he played just one year of professional basketball, for the Denver Rockets and the Pittsburgh Pipers of the ABA.

Around the same time, his relationship with my mother was falling apart. He was getting high, keeping drugs right out in the open on the nightstand. He’d react to the slightest provocation. One time my mother locked him out of our apartment, and he shot out all the windows. When he was sober, he was a loving man, but when he was high, he was somebody else.

“I was out of basketball,” my father later told me. “I was struggling. My lowest point came in December of 1972, when you were nine months old. I weighed one hundred ninety-five pounds, less than I had coming out of high school. That’s what the drugs had done—or, rather, what I had done with the drugs. By the time I got back to Chicago, I was back near my playing weight at two hundred thirty-five pounds. I was ready for my last chance.”

His last chance came with a tryout for the Seattle SuperSonics. They knew about my dad’s past troubles, and they were concerned. They wanted to know he was a family man. Problem was, my folks were separated, heading toward divorce. So, early one morning, my father packed everything he owned into the backseat of a rented Dodge Charger and drove to Eighty-eighth and Dorchester in Chicago’s South Side, where my mother and I lived.

Here is where my parents’ stories diverge. “He took us out of the house at gunpoint, handcuffed me to the front seat, put you in the back, and started driving across the country to Seattle,” my mother says.

“You and your mother got in the front seat with me,” my father recalls, “and we started out on Interstate 90 heading west.”

I can imagine my mother seething inside—not panicked, not defeated—waiting for her moment. My father must have known this too. Part of him might even have feared her, a strange thing since he was the one at the wheel. She had this indomitable spirit; it only grew stronger when she felt her child was in danger.

What could she do? When we stopped for gas, she says he handcuffed her to the steering wheel. When she needed to use the restroom, she says he stood outside the door. The situation must have looked hopeless to her.

My mother escaped with me early one Sunday morning. She recalls my father pulling off the highway to get gas; there were no plans to stop for food, no plans to sleep. She complained of a headache and asked my father to bring her something for the pain.

He came back to the car with a bottle of pills. My mother took two like the container directed then somehow managed to put the rest in his can of Coke as he gassed up the car. When he got back in, he took a big swig of soda then threw the can out the window. It wasn’t long before he started feeling the effects.

“Did she drug me? I don’t know,” my father told me later. “All I know is that I made the decision that it was better to sleep during the day and drive at night while you were sleeping.”

We stopped at a roadside motel on the outskirts of Madison, Wisconsin. I wonder what people saw when they looked at us. A beautiful family on a cross-country trip? A doting mother holding her child? A loving husband clutching his wife close by his side? Did they see the family we were or the family we might have been?

My mother told me that my father had just enough time to handcuff her to the bed, sit me on the couch, strip off some of his clothes, and fall onto the mattress, his feet dangling off the edge. Soon he was snoring away. Once he was fast asleep, my mother says she started working her small hand against the cuff, folding her fingers in on themselves and pulling until metal scraped skin.

“Rashid,” she said in a stage whisper. “Rashid, baby, go outside and play. Mommy will be there soon.”

Something in her eyes must have told me, young as I was, that this was no time for games. I followed her instructions and slipped out the door. Her hand finally free, my mother followed after me. She made it to the lobby and told the man working there to call the police.

“Next thing I know,” my father now says, “I wake up and there are two policemen standing over my bed. One of them’s got a shotgun on me. The other’s pointing a pistol. I raised my hands up above my head and turned my eyes to the sky. I can remember seeing a teardrop of water falling down from that low, low ceiling. That’s when I cried out: ‘Don’t shoot! Don’t shoot!’

“It was all over the radio, the television, the newspaper. ‘Kidnapping,’ in capital letters. But I was in jail only overnight. They released me the next morning without charges.”

Madison, Wisconsin, is one hundred sixty-three miles from the South Side of Chicago and nearly two thousand miles from Seattle. The road trip, the kidnapping, my father’s dream—whatever you call it—it was over almost as soon as it had started.

Can a story you’ve only overheard somehow still give shape to your life? Can other people’s stories also be your own? Hearing this was like discovering a lost piece of my past, like having my life told as legend. Could it have really happened? Part of me figured that when I asked my parents about it, they’d deny it. But when I asked each of them, they confirmed it—even if they told their stories in a different key.

They say trauma always accompanies birth, the beginning of new life. When I think about my parents and me driving toward my father’s dream, I think about what it means to bear the legacy of these two people who were estranged from each other before I was born but remain tied together because I was born. It speaks to me about connections, willing and not. It speaks to the fact that when you try to tell your own story, you can’t help but tell someone else’s along the way. This is my life, my story, but it’s their story too.

I think of my mother, a young woman with a child at the time threatened by a man she still loves. Maybe that’s why she’s always loved me so hard, like she could lose me at any moment. Today she is a mother, a grandmother, my best friend.

I think about my father and how his inner pains and self-doubt sometimes expressed themselves in ways he couldn’t control. What possesses a man to aim a gun at the woman he loves and the child he helped conceive? If not the gun, then what possesses him to pursue a dream past all consequence? Today he is a thinker, a dreamer, a complex soul.

Who knows the truth of the story? My truth is this: I inherited love and trouble, joy and fear. I experienced all of these things before I could even put them into words. The story I have to tell you is one of inheritance and identity, of the values my mother passed on to me that I hope to pass on to my daughter, Omoye. The story is of making myself into the man that I want to be: an artist, a father, a child of God.

When I was given the opportunity to write this book, I had some misgivings. Had I lived enough? Would anyone want to hear my story? When I think of memorable life stories, I think of great men and women looking back over the decades. I think of Malcolm X and Assata Shakur. I think of Maya Angelou and Nelson Mandela. What story does a kid from the South Side of Chicago have to tell?

So I talked with friends. I talked with my mother, my father, my grandmother, my daughter. We laughed, we reminisced, we even shed a few tears. At a certain moment, I took in a breath, I breathed it out, and I knew that I had lived a life I wished to share. I knew that if I dedicated myself to writing about my life, it might all start to make sense.

I’ve always loved to write. It must have started with my mother. She still has a note I wrote to her when I was six or seven years old about leaving the key so she could get in the house and how I didn’t want to get a whippin’. She tells me that’s my first letter.

In school, I’d write love letters to cute girls in class. When I first started rapping, I’d write my lyrics in a composition book. As I grew older, I’d write my hopes, fears, and dreams in a journal. I still write to this day, even to people who are part of my everyday life—my mother, my daughter, my friends. I may be a talker just like my dad, but I love to express myself through letters. Maybe I write because I’ve learned to show certain parts of my heart on the page that I still struggle to capture in speech.

That’s why I’ve decided to begin each chapter of this book with a letter. In these pages, I’ve written to my mother and to my daughter and to many others—to you, to lost friends, to distant lovers, to future generations. Each letter offers a way into the stories of my life that follow. Together they tell a story of their own, of a life still very much in the making.

I have loved and lost and given and failed and fallen and prayed and believed and worked and sexed and proved and listened and traveled and healed and grown and watched and journeyed and loved again and grown some more. I’ve done all of these things and all of these things have created the man that I am today.

I also realize that my life is an expression of all those I have known and all who have known me. They are people in and out of the public eye. They are friends and fans and lovers and mentors. They are people like my mother and my grandmother and the guy I only ever knew as Duck, who was on the street but used to say that one day I’d be a star. People like Yusef and Ajile and the bellman at the House of Blues Hotel in Chicago who always had a kind word when I arrived.

My life is people like Omoye, Murray, Kanye, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Minister Louis Farrakhan, Maya Angelou, my father, Mike Jolicoeur, Dion, Dart, Ron, Rasaan, Monard, and the memory of another South Side son named Emmett Till. All of these people are a part of me as I am a part of them. Their souls have joined with mine. In fact, sometimes when I’m writing songs I find myself looking through their eyes, expressing what I believe they might see and feel.

You’ll hear some of these other voices threading in and out of the pages that follow. Other than my own, the voice you’ll most often hear is that of my mother. It’s only right given that my mother has been—and remains—the most influential person in my life. Throughout the chapters, you’ll find her speaking in her own words directly to you through italicized text, offering perspectives on my past that complement and occasionally even contradict the view of my life as I see it.

I’m writing you now because I know I have something to say to you. I believe we can forge a connection that will help us to recognize the other in the self. I know I can enlighten. I know I can inspire. And I know that this journey is not just about what I think about myself. It’s not about how many records I’ve made or how many films I’ve done. It’s about what has happened in my life that can spark you to be better in yours. What have I said and done, what have I failed to say and failed to do, that will give you insight as you strive to reach your full potential and serve your purpose on this earth?

So I hope this letter finds you in the place where you are willing and ready to progress in your life. I hope this book not only entertains you but also helps you grow in a spirit of openness. I write to you wishing, praying, and sending the best love to you. This is my story, the story of an uncommon life.

Love,
Common

Middle Aged White Guy Loved This Book.
By D. Buxman
While this review might be the kiss of death since I'm probably not the target audience, I have to say I thought this book was terrific. I didn't know much about Common, although I had heard about Fox News coverage of his visits to the White House. When I saw him on the Daily Show last night it became clear that this Common wasn't the same guy that was villified by Fox. Once I started the book, I couldn't put it down. While I probably disagree with most of his politics, the observations he had about fatherhood, responsibility and being a man were universal. I really enjoyed Common's writing style and the juxtapositioning of his Mother's comments throughout the book was priceless. Parts of the book were quite funny (like the story about Common being an ugly baby), but the overriding message of what personal responsibility and a Mother's love can accomplish was extremely inspirational. Common is a man of strong faith, while being open to other religious paths. He admits his mistakes and takes responsibility for them, while recognizing that we can all be better people and have more that should unite us than divide us.

A new millennium "Cooley High"
By Teigh
Malik Sayeed and Hype Williams should snap up the movie rights to this incredible coming of age memoir. It would make a great film and THEY could probably get the artists to play themselves...what an ode to hip-hop THAT would be!!! (I want in on opening night if this becomes a feature film)...

I'm probably not the demographic either; yet Common always fascinated me. His style, his swagger, his humility, what he said and MORE IMPORTANLY what he NEVER said. NOW he speaks, eloquently, spiritually, honestly about himself, his flaws, his yearnings, his desires - which were and are no different than any other Black boy in America. I heard about this book via PUT ON BLAST, and I was directed to an excerpt. Each chapter begins with a letter written by Common. His mother also contributes and her wisdom -- well she can and should expand and write her own book. I would recommend this book to any young single mother of a boy; especially a Black boy. Mrs. Hines has a lot to say about womanhood, motherhood, and raising a boy that is worth reading beyond Common's story. Common is blessed. His mother is one sharp woman! I LOVE the three criteria for allowing Common to move back into her home...and the letter to her son is GENIUS!!! In my opinion it is right up there with the writing of Lorraine Hansberry expressed via Lena Younger, "Raisin In The Sun" (the "you feelin' better than him today" soliloquy to Beneatha Younger). Common and his Mother have collaborated to create an extraordinary memoir!!!

I had the pleasure of attending his book signing in NY earlier this week, and I'm glad I supported this book AND got a signed copy from both Common and his Mom. I love that brothers are telling their stories (Tyrese has a very good book out and the long awaited Kevin Powell tome is coming). I laughed, I learned about boys transitioning into men and I could not put this book down. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. As Mos Def said, "I ain't no perfect man...I'm trying to do the very best I can..." (Wow we need a book from Dante too, and isn't that the perfect opening credit song for the feature film?). Common IS all that...and YES it ALL makes SENSE!

My Dude!
By D. Smith
I would have to say I am the demographic this book is for. I've been a Common(sense) fan since high school in Houston when my boy Brandon from the Chi put me on to his first cassette. I've followed his career ever since happy to put people on to his music who didn't know and sometimes having to defend his artistic growth to a barbershop full of non believers (Electric Circus, i tried lol). This book has helped me get a better perspective of the artist I respect now even more as a fully discovered man. Sometimes you put entertainers on another level that isn't human, you forget that they have the same issues you might have and are growing just as you are. This feels like a chat with a friend that you are catching up with after years apart. I could relate to many of his reminisces since we are about the same age and I feel like I've grown as a man along the same path. I grew up on his music, I was a student at Howard U (with a Resurrection poster on my dorm wall) during the Million Man March, I've lost close friends to violence and disease. It's refreshing to be able to see what he was going through and thinking at times when I can remember where I was and what I was going through as well. I loved the insight into one of my favorite artists. I've passed his earlier music on to my nephew and god son and they are now fans and look forward to his new music. I think this book will make it to them as well. Hell, after his movies now my mom asks who he is so she's about to get down too. Good looking out yet again Com.

Hundreds of spells!
By bleed
Spell law is the basic component of a well ordered and highly detailed spell system capable of being integrated into most gaming systems. It is a vital component of the Rolemaster system, yet was designed for cross genre/system integration. Hundreds of spells suitable for dozens of professions in lists to level 50. Add Rolemaster companions to get to thousands of spells and up to level 100. I have found this system to be without equal.

When we become aware that we are God, we see life differently. For the most of you, you struggle in a raging river of humanity. You are still caught up with the snags of your past. You are caught up with the wounds of your bodies, your neuronets. You are trying to make a crossing, but you are so afraid of being hurt that you hold back, or that you are going to miss something else. So you are caught up on the snags of crossing this river.? When we don't know that we are God, there is one thing we do know, that we are human beings. And that knowingness is so common that we have yet to have a startling realization that when we know that that is what we are, then is it any wonder then that we are part of the snags of life that tear at the flesh, that hook upon it, that we are a part of a life that is so encumbered by the flesh that we are afraid to cross the river? - Ramtha

Interesting, but the author omits most of the "how to" aspects
By Brian
First, the Amazon website description does not inform you what is contained in the "Forward" of the book. And that is, the author and publisher have assumed that you have attended a retreat or workshop at the Ramtha/Knight school or that you are at least familiar with the book Ramtha: A Beginner's Guide to Creating Reality (3rd Edition).

I bought 9 of these little Ramtha "fireside" books and will try to post a review of all of them as I read them, so you can click on the link for my other reviews. I'm reviewing the 2006 Revised edition of Crossing the River, which is about three pages shorter than the original version.

Ramtha states that a person who finds lessons in nature becomes a lover of nature and they become in union with nature. They are a master in the making and can cross the river and can walk on water because they are the water and can command the water to be still and become a bridge.

Ramtha states on page 34, "I taught you how to do the miraculous" and also, if you had heard everything that I have taught and applied yourself, then you will have a crossing. However, when Ramtha says "I taught you how to do the miraculous," he does not mean that he taught it in this book--or any of his other books. He also refers to the "Great Work" (the application of knowledge by which the person becomes enlightened and is transmuted into an immortal, divine being) and the "analogical mind" (the alignment of the primary and secondary consciousnesses, the "observer" and the personality along with the opening of the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th seals). None of these concepts are taught in this book. There is no chapter on how to actually "cross the river."

The book does have a few suggestions on things to work on, like purity of spirit, being honest, maintaining focus, and cleaning the soul and the mind. There is much said of how not to cross the river. Keeping your mind in the past, thinking about the things that went wrong or right, the resentment, expectations, victimization, and the games you play etc. are all ways to keep one foot on the shore so that you will never cross the river and you will continue to manifest the same life you've had before.

After reading this book and Ramtha's Beginner's Guide to Creating Reality, I learned that the actual techniques for how to be create your own reality are only taught in the Ramtha/Knight workshops. So one could say that buying this book is similar to attending a free lecture given prior to workshop in which the concepts are introduced, but you have to pay for the workshop if you actually want learn the techniques.

Other thoughts: Ramtha states (on page 36) that reality begins in the mind, not in the physical, and also references instantaneous manifestation (page 46). There are other books that share this type of quantum physics outlook, such as the Matrix Energetics book by Richard Bartlett. Ramtha talks about being totally present in the moment, and there are other books on this topic such as the books by Eckhart Tolle (e.g The Power of Now and The New Earth).

The Power of Living in the Now
By Laura De Giorgio
Each book in the Ramtha's Fireside Collection revolves around one central topic. The topic of this book deals with the importance of living in the now and the fact that one won't be going spiritually anywhere fast without willingness to let go of the past and be fully present in the moment.

The book deals with some truths that are presented at much greater length in A Course in Miracles - as the entire training manual from A Course in Miracles guides the person through the process of realizing that his mind is preoccupied with past thoughts, helping the person to let go of them and live fully in the present.

Holding onto the past, emotionally, keeps the individual's energy locked in the past and prevents the individual from accomplishing effortlessly many wonderful things which the individual could accomplish in the present moment.

A simple act of forgiveness and just letting go of whatever has happened in the past has helped numerous individuals experience instant healings.

Any conflict that anyone can ever experience is based upon dragging something from the past into the present moment - upon

comparing and judging, instead of just being fully present in the moment.

By living in the present one moves into a timeless zone - his entire energy available to flow freely to create desired reality now, without any obstructions - affording the individual to experience in the outer world even instant manifestations. One moment you think a thought, the next moment it is manifested in your outer experience.

That's why some people, like Jung, would say that you know you are moving forward along your spiritual path when you are experiencing increased number of synchronicities. Synchronicities are simply instant manifestation of one's thoughts which are possible because the individual has become a "clear" channel and is free of any obstructions and encumbrances from the past.

There is yet another wonderful side-effect of being fully present in the moment - as anyone who has wholeheartedly worked with A Course in Miracles can attest to - you begin to feel more vibrantly alive than you ever felt before, you also begin to experience boundless joy, happiness and power.

Great Book for Part-Time Programmers
By A Customer
Firstly, this book covers Fortran 90 and 95 in great detail, offering many helpful suggestions to those who are used to older versions of Fortran, such as Fortran 77, and highlighting the differences between the 90 and 95 versions. Where this book shines is in the hundreds of examples of and bits of advice on good programming practice spread throughout the book. It's specifically tailored to those "part-time" programmers, scientists and engineers who do not come from a computer science or software engineering background. Most current (and new) Fortran programmers would benefit greatly by learning the programming style found here. I can't agree with all the advice, however, such as abandoning the basic "real" and "double precision" data types in favor of the new "kind" parameterized types. Still, the philosophy behind such advice is sound, and good programmers will know when and when not to use specific language features. One subject unfortunately missing from the book is programming for parallel processors, and other techniques to speed programs up. But most Fortran programmers don't need to worry about this subject and those who do can get O'Reilly's "High Performance Computing" and Jon Bentley's "Writing Efficient Programs". The examples and quizzes within, and the exercises at the end of, each chapter make this a great textbook. The appendices and index make it useful as a reference book. If you program in Fortran 90 or 95, I'd say this book is a must-have.

A beginner's review...
By J.L
I am new to programming. I somehow missed picking up any language as an undergraduate and by the time I became a graduate student in physics I knew I needed to pick one up fast. I've tried many books but I just can't get through them. I usually don't make it past the 2nd chapter. There are many reasons for this but mostly the authors do not have enough examples and they tend to go off on tangents that detract from the lesson at hand. Recently I began a research project that used a ton of Fortran 90 legacy code and so I decided that I needed to try again. I got this book about a week ago and I am finishing chapter 5 at the moment. This book is great for learning how to program. It cuts right to the meat and gives well explained examples and quizzes throughout the book. I worked the examples and quizzes and a few problems from the end of the chapter after reading through it. If you are looking for a reference this probably isn't it. If, however, you are a beginner like me looking to learn how to program in Fortran 90/95 this is your book.

Great to learn Fortran
By J. Court
I have been using this text to learn Fortran 90/95. I have used Matlab significantly and understand very minimal C++. I find this book very useful and informative. It outlines programing pitfalls and tips for good programming practices. The examples are very easy to follow and the index is very usable. I would say this is a good book if you are just learning Fortran. Another thing I like about it is the fact that it has a chapter discussing older Fortran practices and the new/ modified commands. I have been using that section a lot to update an old Fortran 77 program I have. Overall it was well worth the $60 or so that I paid. There may be other references that are available online for free, but I like that I can highlight and write in a text, so I prefer printed material to online material.

A collection of essays from today’s most acclaimed authors—from Cheryl Strayed to Roxane Gay to Jennifer Weiner, Alexander Chee, Nick Hornby, and Jonathan Franzen—on the realities of making a living in the writing world.

In the literary world, the debate around writing and commerce often begs us to take sides: either writers should be paid for everything they do or writers should just pay their dues and count themselves lucky to be published. You should never quit your day job, but your ultimate goal should be to quit your day job. It’s an endless, confusing, and often controversial conversation that, despite our bare-it-all culture, still remains taboo. In Scratch, Manjula Martin has gathered interviews and essays from established and rising authors to confront the age-old question: how do creative people make money?

As contributors including Jonathan Franzen, Cheryl Strayed, Roxane Gay, Nick Hornby, Susan Orlean, Alexander Chee, Daniel Jose Older, Jennifer Weiner, and Yiyun Li candidly and emotionally discuss money, MFA programs, teaching fellowships, finally getting published, and what success really means to them, Scratch honestly addresses the tensions between writing and money, work and life, literature and commerce. The result is an entertaining and inspiring book that helps readers and writers understand what it’s really like to make art in a world that runs on money—and why it matters. Essential reading for aspiring and experienced writers, and for anyone interested in the future of literature, Scratch is the perfect bookshelf companion to On Writing, Never Can Say Goodbye, and MFA vs. NYC.

Review
"Career of Evil is the third--and best--novel in the engaging Cormoran Strike private detective series. . . . [Galbraith has] invented a serial killer for the ages, one who chills us from the book's grim but riveting opening. . . . This perfectly paced mystery is packed with surprises, all of which play out with flawless crime-fiction logic."―Jocelyn McClurg, USA Today (4/4 stars)

"Pure pleasure. . . . That's what makes these novels so good: They are clever, tightly plotted mysteries with all of the most pleasurable elements of the genre (good guy, bad guy, clues, twists, murder!), but with stunning emotional and moral shading."―Annalisa Quinn, NPR

"Hugely entertaining . . . This gifted storyteller has taken full command of the new turf. . . . Career of Evil succeeds powerfully on its own terms."―Lloyd Sachs, Chicago Tribune

"Strike and Robin are just as magnetic as ever."―Michiko Kakutani, New York Times

"Another triumph . . . Its darkness is mitigated by its sparkling protagonists."―Kim Hubbard, People

Less Cowbell
By JB
Another good addition to the series. There's a lot to like about Career of Evil but, unfortunately, a few major shortcomings. Without spoiling anything, this time out our hero is trying to nab a serial killer with a taste for dismemberment. It might be one of three suspects Strike has a history with, or perhaps another unknown killer. The plot has been detailed by others at length, so I'll just offer some thoughts about the pluses and minuses:

The Good:
- Robin, one of the most interesting and likable characters JKR has ever created, co-stars in the novel and her identity is superbly defined
- Strike's backstory is addressed in more detail, and it's very compelling
- The settings are vividly depicted, with excellent descriptions of sites all over seedy and posh London and Northern England
- Heavy topics like rape, child abuse, and mental illness are thoughtfully considered and woven into the narrative without being overly preachy
- The relationship between Robin and Strike continues to develop in a complex, unpredictable way
- The dialog is consistently excellent and realistic
- Much less emphasis on Strike's disability, which plagued the last novel
- The reveal, unlike the first two novels, is not an endless explanatory monologue -- it's thankfully short and sweet
**These positives far outweigh the following negatives, definitely making Career of Evil a worthwhile read. Nevertheless...

The Bad:
- Many of the characters are one-dimensional. While Strike and Robin are increasingly depicted as complicated, multifaceted protagonists, most others are portrayed without any significant depth. The bad guys are REALLY bad; the victims are hopelessly innocent, others just occupy space. Some, like Matthew and Whittaker, are cartoonishly described and Detective Carver is, to put it bluntly, Vernon Dursely
- Someone needs to pluck up the courage and let the author know she needs an editor. The book is downright plodding at times.
- The basic premise of the plot is forced and improbable (BIID? Really?)
- Each chapter leads with lyrics from a Blue Oyster Cult song. These lines figure into the story (sort of), but this silly gimmick gets old fast
- The violence (and there is quite a lot) is gratuitously over the top, as if JKR is determined to identify herself as an adult writer
- The comic element featured in the first two novels is largely absent in the third

The Ugly:
- The book features intermittent passages shown from the killer's perspective which are eye-rollingly bad. I hate to say that but it's true. Think of every serial killer you've ever seen in a movie or read about in a book, and that's the stereotype you get -- right down to the killer's referring to a woman as "It" a la Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs. These sections are so subpar, so cliched, and so unimaginative that it's hard to believe that JKR wrote them. I suppose they are included to give the narrative an additional angle but, rather than compliment the story's trajectory, they dumb it down.

Despite its drawbacks, Career of Evil is a very good read. Slow at times, but enjoyable. As said above, the positives outweigh the negatives. In particular, the maturing of Robin's and Strike's characters is a leap forward. I wouldn't be surprised if this book is regarded as the most popular one in the series so far, although the hyper-violent yet cliched serial killer may be off-putting to some.

An Exceptional Addition to the Comoran Strike Series...
By David
Robert Galbraith (AKA, J.K. Rowling) has done it again with this third book in her excellent Cormoran Strike series. This time, the story ensues when Cormoran's assistant and detective-in-training, Robin Ellacott receives the severed leg of an unknown woman in a package delivered to the office. Cormoran and Robin begin their hunt for the killer, but it's hard to know at times who is the hunter and who the hunted. A ruthless killer is out there, and Cormoran's life is not the only one on the line.

This story is wonderful blend of suspense, humor, and intrigue as Cormoran and Robin continue their subtle dance as detective and assistant; and perhaps something more. At the same time, tension between Cormoran and the police investigating the crime continues as, unfortunately, his past successes in solving crimes have highlighted their failures.

The best thing about every one of these books is that Rowling brings her great gift of storytelling to a new realm of fiction. The characters are vivid, the plots intricate and believable. The worlds Rowling builds are so well woven, you feel yourself pulled into the story. You become one of the characters. To me, it seems the "Harry Potter" series was just the opening act for one of the most gifted writers of my generation..

The Odd Partnership of Comoran and Robin
By Mystery Buff
I have now read all 3 books of the Comoran Strike series. The first and the last were my favorites based on the above criteria. Comoran and Robin were introduced in the first, engaging me to read more about their adventures. The second book waned in my opinion as I had trouble keeping track of characters and motives. But the third book immediately got my attention as Robin, Comoran's secretary seemed the focus of potential danger and harm. Robin's response to this was to draw upon her newly developed investigating skills and jump into the hunt for the person who was threatening her. Comoran's response to this was atypical. He became angry and blaming which suggested a sense of a romantic interest developing between the two. This was an important plot twist for me. I was wondering if the two would become more than business partners. As thee plot moved toward its resolution, Robin began her own investigation and is nearly thrown into danger on one of her solo adventures. Comoran goes ballistic, calls her unprofessional and fires her, resulting in another plot twist. The last part of the book is truly a "What will happen next?" Will Comoran rehire Robin? Will Robin marry her obsequious boy friend? Who is the real killer? Most of the answers to these questions are plot twists in themselves. Now I am wondering if there will be a fourth book in the series. I was pulling for a more romantic and perhaps naive outcome than what I was served up. Made me want to think about the nature of true plot twists.
