Refreshing honesty!

If you want an insider's understanding of such topics as getting through a religious upbringing, through medical school, through Vietnam, and through life's curve balls, this is a totally realistic and refreshingly honest book. You may not like everything the author believes, but you will IDENTIFY with it. As a Vietnam veteran, theologist, medical doctor and cancer survivor, what is truly amazing is the author's ability to change gears when you least expect it - from educational to cynical, humorous to inspiring. And, it is well written throughout!

About the Author
Laurence H. Shoup received his Ph.D. in History from Northwestern University in 1974. He is the author of several books, including Imperial Brain Trust (with William Minter) and Rebels: A People's History of Early California, 1769‐1901, as well as many articles in scholarly and popular publications. He has taught U.S. history at the University of Illinois, San Francisco State University, Sonoma State University, and elsewhere, and has been active in the anti‐war and social justice movements since the 1960s.

The history of 20th capitalism/imperialism through the history of the Council on Foreign Relations

Noam Chomsky said at one point that "There's a reason nobody studies history. It just teaches you too much." That is certainly true of Wall Street's Think Tank. Bypassing the academic doubletalk and obfuscation of other scholarly histories which are meant to give the impression that world affairs too complicated for the average person to understand, Laurence Shoup takes a very simple and commonsensical approach to studying US economic and foreign policy: simply reading the documents of the people who plan it. And the result of this is, indeed, a book that teaches you too much.

His principal object of study is the Council on Foreign Relations, a policy think tank which unites the most powerful members of the US capitalist class with the US academic and political class which serves them. There are lots of conspiracy theories about the Council on Foreign Relations for just this reason, and I want to assure you that this book is not a conspiracy theory; it does not present the Council as some kind of dark puppetmaster. Shoup explains that rather than imposing policies themselves, the Council on Foreign Relations "helps unite the capitalist class community, making it not just a class in itself, but a class for itself." In this way, the Council articulates the interests of the wealthiest and most powerful people in the country, and so sets the agenda for US politics and economics. The capitalist class works with the professional/political class to plan strategies for maintaining and expanding the economic and geopolitical power of US, which is no more a conspiracy theory than saying that the board of Apple Computers meets to determine how to increase profits and market share. Shoup's account of history is carefully documented and clear-sighted, since he has all of the planning documents from the Council on Foreign Relations to back him up. If you are interested in why history in the twentieth century took the course that it did, Shoup shows that you can find a lot of the answers just by reading the documents of the powerful people who planned it. And all of the documents he cites are freely open to the public. This is all going on in plain sight--you just have to look at it.

I decided to write this review since I found the book so valuable and saw that only one other person had reviewed it so far. This is an important work of historical precision and clarity, and it deserves serious attention. Wall Street's Think Tank covers the period from 1976 to 2014, so I highly recommend you also check out Imperial Brain Trust by Shoup and a co-author, which covers the period from the 1940's until the late 1970's and examines US strategy for ensuring its supremacy on the global stage after WWII. Both books provide a broad overview of the 20th century, but those are the two main areas of focus.

A must-have book for CCNP Switch

This is a must have book for CCNP Switch self-study. The book goes into detail with practical applications for each topic. The difference in the level of detail and clarity, between this book and the CCNP Switch 642-813 Official Exam Certification Guide, is night and day. The book answers many questions I have that the exam certification guide gloss over. The writing style is entertaining and easy to follow. It is comparable to the CISCO LAN Switching book by Clark and Hamilton. Although the book will not replace the Exam Certification Guide, it is a must have for your CCNP study and a great addition to your library.

I agree with previous reviewer. This book reminds me of the Clark and Hamilton book. That book and this book should be side-by-side. The Clark and Hamilton is good for developing and reburshing your theoretical knowledge and some practical and real life configuration. But since the book was a legacy (the book mostly used Catalyst 5000 as configuration example with some Catalyst 6000 example as well), the Menga's book comes in handy to upgrade the knowledge and deliver new features.
I don't really agree though with previous reviewer said that this book is too advanced for CCNP candidates. Hey, currently I am not even CCNA certified but I still can go along, even without equipments within my reach (only by reading and seeing the diagram and configurations). If you already have proper understanding of the Clark and Hamilton's book, devour infos on Cisco website, and some practical configuration knowledge; you will be just fine.
As mentioned by previous reviewer, Menga tries to balance the discussion on both IOS-based and CatOS-based switches. He mostly uses 2950/3500 XL, 3550, 4000, and 6000 running latest CatOS and IOS as configuration examples. For instance he uses two 4000, one 2950, and one 3550 for STP (Spanning Tree Protocol) illustrations (although you can also use one 2948, one 2926G, one 2950, and one 3550 instead for cheaper version). He also mentions that you can use cheaper version (e.g. 2948 instead of 4000) or even no equipment at all and still understand at least 75% of the book content. Go to Cisco Press's website to find out what the least equipments you need to practise the labs.
The book starts with Cisco switches product and technology, then it goes from foundation theory to configuration examples. Although the theory does not go as deep as the Clark and Hamilton's, it should be sufficient for brush up. Again, for those who have little of no switching knowledge, get the Clark and Hamilton's as well as the Menga's as side-by-side references. The link to the Clark and Hamilton's is already provided above for conveniences.
For you who still need more knowledge, you can also get Karl Solie's CCIE Practical Studies Vol. II as complement. Don't get so nervous even both the Clark and Hamilton's and Solie's have title "CCIE" on them. Their contents are not for CCIE but for CCNA and CCNP instead. These three books will provide you a solid understanding of Cisco switching technology and configurations.

Amazing Reference For Cisco Switching

Do you guys remember Cisco LAN Switching by Clark Hamilton? That book is considered switching bible in networking industry. Now I'll say if you are dealing with Cisco switching in 2003 than this is your bible! This book discusses all new advancements in switching in depth. Justin's hard work is evident in every chapter and he must have put lot of effort in coming up with this book. Hands on labs are just awesome! For those labs only, I'll pay 50 bucks! The book covers all topics like VLAN, STP, VTP, Layer3 Switching, InterVlan Routing and QOS in detail. Clear and Precise diagrams are provided to aid your understanding. CatOS and IOS both get well deserved coverage. Author is not limited to any one switching platform in his examples but he is using 6500s with SUPS, 4500s, 3550 et al. Even hard to find topics like when to use MLS and CEF is discussed in amazing detail. The title is misleading, this book is way too advanced for CCNPs but it is a must-have resource for CCIE lab and field. If you are already a CCIE and might feel you don't need it, think again! This is one of those books which will always find special place in your bookshelf like Jeff Doyle, Richard Stevens. I can't say enough but it is simply a fantastic effort by Justin and Cisco Press. Five Stars!

Honest review

I bought this book before building my brand new MG Gundam. I am not totally new to this hobby as 10 years ago I had more than 10 Gundam models and now getting into it again. Before, I just assembled it no painting, no brushing, no filing. But now I'm into new level and want to get better result than before.

I didn't know anything about the paint/ink and coating, that's the reason why I bought this book. This book will save you some money from destroying your precious plastic model through proper use of paint, coating and from buying excessive stuffs that in the end you can't use it all. You will have a better idea which one to buy.

I read it thoroughly and they explained almost every detail for every topic provided (cutting, filing, sanding, paneling, weathering, and shading). This will save you time from searching every forum and video for your questions. They also show photos of their work even common HG model went really good after doing such detailing and spraying which you will also get after following the instructions. Very helpful for newbies or people plan to enter this hobby who have no idea where to start or people want to improve their work.

You might ask why I gave 3 stars instead of 5 from every positive aspect (content) I talked about. I gave 3 because for the price $25 + shipping and tax I find this book a little bit expensive to what you will get.

First fillers, there are total of 92 pages almost 15 pages are Gunpla history (even stock exchange wow) and at least 4 pages of Gundam box (useless and unattractive) photos. Introduction is there which is good but 15 pages of history is likely to be skipped.

Second, the paper quality is like a hardened news paper a little bit cheap feeling for a $25 price. I have plenty of books and guides that cost about $19.99 but the quality is top-notch and hey they exceed 92 pages for about 200 - 1100 pages. Even a cook guide that costs $14.99 has better paper quality than this. If you want you can buy the digital book also available here for cheaper price.

Will I recommend this book to other people? Yes, for absolute newbies.
I bought this for the information I need and they provided it very well. Things you don't even have a slight of idea will be tackled on this book. Simple, easy to read, and on the spot! Of course this will get better the soon they published an updated version.

Weird formatting

I'm really happy to see a non-Japanese gunpla book - but the formatting in kindle version is weird. Every page is a separate image, which results in a lot of white space, and a smallish page on the top of the screen. Not really something I'd like to see in primarily visuals-oriented book. :(

Great for beginners

I have been doing this kind of modeling for over 10 years now and it is awesome to see a book out there that will teach you everything you need to know to get started. Sure there are tutorials online but nothing compares to having a book to skim through.

I do have a issue I would like to address but it is minor. I understand this book was printed using amazon's services to keep initial costs down. but I do think in a volume 2 or reprint that you go with something different. I just feel the print quality, although ok, could be better. I know that means you have to order 1000s upfront but I think it is something to consider. Also I feel glossy pages will be better for this kind of book.

But over all it is a great thing to have in a world where this kind of book does not exist in english form.

Eye Scream Ewe Scream We All Scream...

... for more Nabokov! If only he'd been as prolific as Anthony Trollope. This short novella, written in Berlin in 1930, is not nearly the apex of Nab's oeuvre, but it's awfully good. Even when no one could mistake his lepidopterine syntax, it's fun to see him writing in a new genre with every book. The Eye is a tale in the 'doppelgänger' tradition of Poe's William Wilson, Hawthorne's Wakefield, and Melville's The Confidence Man, though there's no reason to assume that Nabokov was aware of his American forerunners. Since the whole novella is built around the reader's dawning suspicions, I can't say much more about the plot without spoiling your pleasure.

The Marxist Revolution makes a cameo appearance in The Eye - its Russian title was closer to 'The Spy' - as in nearly all of Nab's books. In a brief dismissal of historical determinism, he writes: "Luckily no such laws exist: a toothache will cost a battle, a drizzle cancel an insurrection. Everything is fluid, everything depends on chance, and all in vain were the efforts of that crabbed bougeois in Victorian checkered trousers, author of Das Kapital, fruit of insomnia and migraine. There is a titillating pleasure in looking back at the past and asking oneself 'What would have happened if...' and substituting one chance occurrence for another, observing how, from a gray, barren, humdrum moment in one's life, there grows forth a marvelous rosy event that in reality had failed to flower. A mysterious thing, this branching structure of life..." That, my friends, is not only an eloquent dismissal of Marxism but also a fine statement of evolutionary contingency.

"And yet I am happy. Yes, happy. I swear, I swear I am happy. I have realized that the only happiness in this world is to observe, to spy, to watch, to scrutinize one self and others, to be nothing but a big, slightly vitreous, somewhat bloodshot, unblinking eye. I swear that this is happiness."
Okay, I'll accept that, as long as this eye has another Nabokov novel to read.

Delightful Nabokov novella

Written in 1930, this was the last of his Russian novels that I read. It is short, lucid and imaginative and gives hints of later novels featuring his unique doppelgangers. Did the main character succeed in killing himself? Is he having a funny dream after death which he is able to control, or is he deceiving himself? These questions are central to The Eye, which is one of Nabokov's simplest plots, but still intriguing.

The Eye, The Spy

In this short but exquisite novel, Nabokov returns to a familiar subject; that of a Russian spy in Berlin. The book explains that there are Russian spies all over and that they act as the best of friends and neighbors, until they take you under arrest or worse.

The story depicts the interactions of one spy named Smurov, whom the reader is not informed is also the narrator until almost the very end. Nabokov takes us through a significant time period, when Smurov sees himself through the eyes of others, not through his own existence. As a spy, he does not really exist. He is there to observe others and to keep his own identity a secret.

Nabokov takes us through a bit of surrealistic writing as he indicates that what Smurov sees is all a dream. Yet the reality for Smurov of life is this hiding in society, this spying and because of it, such a person can really only understand himself, through the reflections of him by others. This all culminates with the admission of Smurov that he is happy, when he is observing, happy when he sees himself through that mirror of others, happy when he is invisible and yet observant. This existence is what Nabokov transmits to the reader.

The book is recommended to all lovers of Nabokov's truly modern fictional approach. The book will entertain and delight and all in a mere 104 pages. It is well worth the read.
