William A. Yost is Professor of Hearing Sciences, Adjunct Professor of Psychology, and Adjunct Professor of Otolaryngology at Loyola University Chicago. He is also director of the Parmly Institute and the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Minor.

Necessary Yet Dreary

While a must-read, Yost's writing is dense and difficult. This reviewer has a Ph.D. in French and is therefore not unused to reading arcane and obscure texts. The information could be presented in a much more straight forward style. However, given the fact that audiology programs have a high weed-out component, this could be why this textbook has survived as a leading basic textbook. The skillful reader will be able to appreciate what an exciting discipline audiology can be. It will only be the determined, expert reader who will be able to use the text well. Advice to the young person who is faced with this book: hang in there--yes, it is difficult to read, and no, you should not write this way if it ever becomes your turn to write a textbook!

and not useful for the class

I bought this for my Hearing Science class. It was required for a "different perspective". Honestly... I looked in it a few times. But the language and substance coverage in the book was way over many of my peers, including myself, and not useful for the class. If you like a technical book filled with tons of information and like a dry read... go for it. But I did not enjoy reading any part of it. Very hard to follow and not easy to read.

THERESA REBECK's plays include Bad Dates, Omnium Gatherum (a Pulitzer finalist), The Scene, and Mauritius, which won Boston's prestigious IRNE and Elliot Norton Award and premiered on Broadway in 2007. Rebeck has also won the Peabody, the Writer's Guild of America Award for Episodic Drama, the Mystery Writers of America's Edgar Award, the National Theatre Conference Award, and the William Inge New Voices Playwriting Award. She holds a Ph.D. from Brandeis University and lives in Brooklyn with her husband and two children.

Rapid fire wit, wonderful lead character and great twist ( and twisted!) ending! Enjoyed reading this before I saw the Dorset Vt production, a tighter version with an even better ending.

About the Author

BUY THIS BOOK

I have read many books on nutrition. Many are, frankly, confusing while others can be quite misleading. This, however, is not the case with Dr. Robert E. Jenkins' book Your Body's Diet.

The book is written in such a way that the average person can read and understand it. Although Dr. Jenkins' is serious about good health, he interjects humor at different points to make the reading easier.

There is so much information packed into this book that it would be an exercise in futility for me to begin to describe it all. So, I will simply state that the book is a good read with much valuable information for those who are struggling with their health or simply want to live a more robust, healthier life. Just the section on what sweeteners to use and what sweeteners to avoid is worth the price of the book.

One benefit of the book (that many nutritional books do not have) is a section on healthy recipes. For people such as myself who are not very good cooks (or, more precisely, not good healthy-meals cooks), this section has been very helpful to me in my striving for optimal health.

To give you an idea as to how good this book is, I gave one as a gift to a friend of mine. She read it completely in one day and was at the grocery store the next day buying food for the recipes mentioned in the book.

Do yourself a favor and do precisely that. I highly recommend this book.

Best book on nutrition ever!

Ive had the privilege of getting to know Dr. Jenkins over the years that hes helped my mother cure herself of chronic lymphatic leukemia through changing her body's diet. Just last month it was 16 years since her first blood test and this last blood test showed absolutely no traces of the cancer in her bloodstream. She's been symptom-free for the last 13 years.

To buy this book and to abide by Dr. Jenkins wisdom is to change and save your life and the lives of those you love. What you put in your body is almost important as the thoughts in your mind and together those two things can take you from dis-ease to healthy happy living.

In this book Dr. Jenkins breaks down how foods affect your body and why and the effects those foods on your system.

Myself my brother my sister my father and my wife have all changed our bodies diet and have all been proudly healthy individuals for the last decade with profound results in weight stabilization, perfect blood, healthy skin and hair, healthy cholesterol, and on and on.

It wasn't easy 16 years ago. There were no Whole Foods and if you told somebody to drink juiced vegetables they almost ran you outta town! :) but with the options for healthy and organic eating that are ubiquitous no matter where you live nowadays, abiding by Dr. Jenkins incredible book is easier than ever. I cannot recommend this book highly enough and wish you all the best on your journey towards healthier eating and healthier living. The proof is just waiting for you to change Your Body's Diet!

This is another book by this 16th century woman, Marian Sibylla Merian. Her stunning drawings of flowers and the metamorphosis of caterpillars into their next
phase of life is striking. At the age of 52, she went with her daughter from
Amsterdam to South America for this expedition. Her work is exquisite.

Some readers may find this book difficult. Barthes never attempts to give us a uniform narrative about love. Instead, as the title implies, he provides us with fragments--some of which come from literature and some from his own philisophical musings--of a lover's point of view. Since childhood, we are taught to think of love as a singualar entity. Whether it is God's love, marriage, passion, or patriotism, we are taught to think of love as a unique, and exclusive prize. But as Barthes' points out, love is built upon fragments, many of which are mundane.
The most compelling part of "Lover's Discourse" is Barthe's dissection of the phrase, "I love you". Drawing upon literary examples and common sense, Barthes asks us what we mean when we state that we love someone. Do we love what they do for us? Do we love how they make us feel? Do we love the idea of them? Are we in love with love itself? This concept is born out by the protagonist Merseault, in Camus' novel, "A Happy Death". The first thing Merseault says to his lover when she wakes up in the morning is, "hello image".
"Lover's Discourse" extracts love from ideology and examines it under a microscope. We may be confused by what we see, and we may not like it, but the view contains more than a glimmer of reality.
