Updated from Fleet Tactics, Fleet Tactics and Coastal Combat includes relevant information to the new arena that the navy will be finding its self in - littoral combat. Many examples and equations are given in this book to illustrate the points Captain Hughes makes. A must read for anyone who is interested in the evolution of naval combat.

Excellent overview of contemporary and historic tactics

The dismanteling of the Soviet Union brought about a fundamental shift in how we analyze the role of a modern nuclear navy. Large fleet to fleet battles between technologically sophisticated opponents is still a remote possibility, however, surface group actions of the future will certainly resemble smaller more tactical battles as well. The idea of skirmishes and close-quarters combat between vessles must be understood. So to the more immense multi-unit combat possibilities.
This is the spectrum "Fleet Tactics" seeks to analyze. It does this remarkabley well. It also explores more intangible factors. Moral and leadership are terms often used but rarely integrated into a coherant strategy towards victory. Re-examining age old ideas and historic battles is only one side of the coin. Here, we have a book that does this but holds up such notions for the purpose of building better tactical thinking.
I have read both the original edition and this newe, updated one... the changes are clear. We have a book that picks up where naval theory as of 1990 left off. While still managing to represent its original content with value towards the tactician in naval warfare.
Read this book is you are interested in more than just bland analyses of age old battles. Read it if you want to develope a strong understanding of how naval conflicts of almost every kind should be fought. Read it if you want to develope a sound understanding of the timeless tactical cornerstones in naval strategy.

Excellent Overview of Naval Strategy

Hughes brings the reader through successive eras of Naval Strategy, threading common themes about what has changed and what has remained constant, and how (and why) tactics on the water differ from those on land. His updated edition demonstrates the likely impact of advances in technology and shifting political realities on naval power, with implication on tactics, training, and equipment. The work is refreshing not only because contemporary works on naval strategy are relatively uncommon, but also because he lays out in easy to follow fashion the challenges that our navies will face. This is particularily important in an era of shrinking overseas land presence, as the Navy will be called upon to project power more frequently. His stark description of 'exchange ratios' and their implications serve an important reminder to the West of the perils of the fight. The book will comfortably take its spot on your bookshelf beside the numerous general, land, and air strategy books available. I only wish there was more written on this topic.

This historical study of international Middle East politics in regional perspective presents a comprehensive analysis of the interplay between inter-Arab politics and the conflict with Israel--the two key issues which have shaped the Middle East contemporary history (and made it simultaneously tumultuous and a focus of international affairs).

The Decline of the Arab-Israeli Conflict addresses the changing political behavior of the regional Arab system in the Palestine conflict, from total enmity to negotiated peace with Israel. This change is explained as a reflection of state formation process and constant thrust of ruling elites to disengage from compelling supra-state commitments stemming from Pan-Arab nationalist ideology and Islamic political culture.

The book scrutinizes the role of Arab summit conferences which, since 1964, became the main collective Arab institution for decision making on common core issues--foremost of which was the conflict with Israel. The summits' main role was to legitimize incremental departure from the overburdening Palestine conflict whose powerful collective symbolism threatened states' autonomy. Summits' consensus sanctioned shifts from hitherto established collective Arab norms toward Israel as well as on inter-Arab relations, in accordance with core actors' interests. The summits offer a view to the Arab regional system's evolution as a negotiated inter-state order based on mutual recognition of sovereign states as opposed to compulsive collectivism in the name of Pan-Arabism. They were, in fact, a manipulation of the regional Arab system by primary participants' coalitions through employment of financial, ideological, and political trade-offs to resolve inter-Arab differences and reach a consensus on redefined collective goals.

Love this book!

I have all of Marilynn Ham's piano books and love them all. This book contains great hymns of the faith, like "To God Be the Glory", "All That Thrills My Soul", My Faith Has Found a Resting Place", "Be Thou My Vision", a medley of "Trust and Obey", "'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus", and several others. They are all well written and not too difficult even though it is labeled advanced. I have small hands and appreciate not only the musicality of these arrangements, but also that she doesn't have page after page of arpeggios and octaves. ("No One Ever Cared for Me Like Jesus", however, is a difficult one, in my opinion). Believe me, you will love her books if you haven't tried them before.

Good book for fans of Marilynn Ham

I am a church musician with a degree in music and I own approx. 200 books of sacred solo piano arrangements including 14 by Marilynn Ham. While skill level can be a bit subjective, I feel this book is properly labeled. The arrangements in this book are typical of other Marilynn Ham arrangements published by Lillenas in terms of style, level of difficulty, and length. There are one or two pieces that might be categorized as intermediate but all the rest are advanced and will require some practice. Unlike some of her other Lillenas books, there are only two medleys in this collection. The arrangements are:
Be Thou My Vision, (E-flat), 6 pages;
All That Thrills My Soul, (A-flat), 5 pages;
Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee, (G, B-flat), 5 pages;
As the Deer, (E, C), 6 pages;
My Faith Has Found A Resting Place, (G, B-flat), 6 pages
It Is Finished with Because He Lives, (c minor, C, F), 7 pages
Trusting Jesus Medley (Trust and Obey with `Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus), (F, D-flat, D), 5 pages
No One Ever Cared for Me like Jesus (C, D-flat), 6 pages
To God Be the Glory, (A-flat, D-flat), 5 pages
Battle Hymn of the Republic, (C, A, B-flat), 5 pages.
While this isn't one of my top favorite Marilynn Ham books, it was nice to have solo piano arrangements of songs you don't often see published such as All That Thrills My Soul and No One Care for Me like Jesus. Those two and As a Deer are the standouts of this collection. Although it is the simplest in level difficulty, My Faith Has Found a Resting Place is also an effective arrangement. The biggest disappointment of this collection is It Is Finished with Because He Lives. Just the chorus of Because He Lives is included and doesn't feel like it was integrated well into the arrangement. If you are new to Marilynn Ham, this may not be the place to start but fans will definitely want this book.

Dissapointing

I had big plans for this book. It was labeled 'advanced', but really isn't. The arrangements are fitting for an intermidiate pianist who wants to work on something a bit more challenging. They are a wierd length --- too long for an offeratory, but to short for a special. They avaerage 4-5 pages long each. Nice variety of songs, though. Some are old hymns, and then they have newer titles. There is a medley of 'It is Finished' and 'Because He Lives', and I was very exited about it. But, it is really boring -- sounds like backround music. It could've been so much more powerful (it could've been longer too, you're just getting into it when it ends. Sounds rushed.) The 'Trusting Jesus Medley' could've been very beautiful, but it is too easy.
The good thing about this book, as the other reviewer stated, is that there are no impossible arpeggios. All the arpeggios in these arrangements are fitting and doable. They never sound out of place. These are definately not the piano solos I had wanted, but I will try to use some of them.
