Life For Us, by Choman Hardi

Choman Hardi was born in Iraqi Kurdistan just before her family fled to Iran. She returned home at the age of five, but when she was 14 the Kurds were attacked with chemical weapons, and her family was forced back into exile. Her poems chart lives of displacement and terror, repression and the subjugation of women, family, love, flight and survival. Life for Us is a book of great warmth and passion, exploring both the struggle of a people not represented on the world map and the pains of exile. It shows the human spirit triumphing over adversity. Intertwining political and personal struggle in a quirky, sometimes humorous way, Choman Hardi's poems draw upon dual memories-like fireworks and gunfire-as well as different realities for different sexes: the father's political struggle and loss of books, the mother's silent labor and weeping for others.

Properties of Materials: Anisotropy, Symmetry, Structure, by Robert E. Newnham

Crystals are sometimes called 'Flowers of the Mineral Kingdom'. In addition to their great beauty, crystals and other textured materials are enormously useful in electronics, optics, acoustics and many other engineering applications. This richly illustrated text describes the underlying principles of crystal physics and chemistry, covering a wide range of topics and illustrating numerous applications in many fields of engineering using the most important materials today. Tensors, matrices, symmetry and structure-property relationships form the main subjects of the book. While tensors and matrices provide the mathematical framework for understanding anisotropy, on which the physical and chemical properties of crystals and textured materials often depend, atomistic arguments are also needed to quantify the property coefficients in various directions. The atomistic arguments are partly based on symmetry and partly on the basic physics and chemistry of materials. After introducing the point groups appropriate for single crystals, textured materials and ordered magnetic structures, the directional properties of many different materials are described: linear and nonlinear elasticity, piezoelectricity and electrostriction, magnetic phenomena, diffusion and other transport properties, and both primary and secondary ferroic behavior. With crystal optics (its roots in classical mineralogy) having become an important component of the information age, nonlinear optics is described along with the piexo-optics, magneto-optics, and analogous linear and nonlinear acoustic wave phenomena. Enantiomorphism, optical activity, and chemical anisotropy are discussed in the final chapters of the book.

A Classical Textbook from the Master of Applied Crystal Physics & Chemistry
By Entropy4Life
It is a great pleasure to be the first person to write a review for the book by Professor Newnham.

As a background for those who do not know Prof. Newnham, let me tell you that he is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and the Ben Frankling Medal Laureate in Electrical Engineering, to name a few of his credentials. What is today known as "piezoelectric composites" is his brainchild, which had an immense impact on modern medical ultrasound and sonar technology.

With all that said, off we go to the review.

Entropy4Life

-----------------------------------------------------

The title of the book is truly a propos to what is covered therein. One cannot help but notice the perfect balance bewteen crystal physics and solid state chemistry throughtout the text. Prof. Newnham's prose is simple and clear, which makes the book very agreeable to read. All scientific explanations that are presented are "right on the money," to coin a phrase.

Older classical texts on crystal physics such as Nye, Banvanghataman, Juretschke, Mason, Voigt, Wooster etc., which are good books to read, do not go beyond providing a phenomenological description of crystal anisotropy using tensors and matrices. On the other hand, classical and widely popular books on crystal chemistry or Solid State Chemistry, such as Jaffe and West, are excessively descriptive and with barely any mathematical treatment of the phenomena of interest.

Prof. Newnham, on the other hand, establishes the necessary mathematical and crystallographic foundation in the first 6 chapters of his book with sufficient clarity and depth. He then proceeds to discuss a wide range of topics in the ensuing 26 chapters in a very systematic fashion.

In addition to the conventional topics in crystal physics, the book also includes chapters on Nonlinear Phenomena (nonlinear dielectric and elastic response, electrostriction, magnetostriction and electromagnetostriction), Ferroic Crystals, Acoustics, and Nonlinear Optics, which are usually not encountered in classical crystal physics or chemistry texts. Most importantly, every physical phenomena described in the book is masterfully linked to its chemical or structural origin, and structure-property relations are effectively conveyed to the reader. The discussion of principles and facts are supported with plenty of experimental data to compare and contrast the effects of structure on properties, which helps the reader to develop a "feel" for what is being discussed. Also, the illustrations are carefully chosen, an fully integrated into the discussion. Furthermore, Prof. Newnham also describes the basics of an array of experimental techniques used to determine various properties of crystals, which complements the discussion very well.

I believe the book is very accessible to even those who have a modest background in physics and chemistry as the subject is treated with a "from the ground up" approach. One merit of the book that should not go unmentioned here is its pedagogical value. And that, indeed, should not be a surprise to the reader since Prof. Newnham is well-known in the scientific community for his zeal to teaching. Hence, the title of this review: "A Classical Textbook from the Master..."

In closing, I am believe that Prof. Newnham's book will most likely become the "Lehrbuch" for the new generation of scientists and enginneers who fancy (or need) to learn applied crystal physics and chemistry. Well...Voldemar Voigt's "Lehrbuch der Kristalphysik" was long overdue for retirement anyway (with all due respect, of course)... :-) I highly recommend it.

PS: Did I mention that the price it right as well?

A must for any MSE curriculum
By MSE fanatic
Until I stumbled upon this text, I have always found that there is a disconnect in many standard MSE textbooks between structure and properties. Normally students take a course in structure which reviews crystallography topics such as lattices, point groups/symmetry , and x-ray diffraction as well as a separate course in properties(electrical, optical, magnetic, mechanical, etc). However, the connection between the two is rarely secured to give the individual a fundamental understanding of the relation amongst the two. This text, in my opinion solves this problem. Dr. Robert Newnham presents all the needed tools from crystallography and connects them with material properties. The reader will find that he covers a broad range of material type responses e.g. dielectric constant, pyroelectricity, elasticity, piezoelectricity, magnetic phenomena, etc. This book has really helped me think about the implications of engineering periodic structures at the nanoscale level.

Searching on the internet, I was sadden to read that Dr. Robert Newnham has passed away. There are a few additions that I think could have been added to this text such as relating structure to electron bandstructures especially of low symmetry crystals. I also agree with Dr. Entropy's review on every point.

It would be nice to take a course that has adapted this text.

This is a must buy for any MSE personnel.

Excellent
By book reviewer
I found this book easy to read even my background in physics is not so solid. However, it would be best if the author can use one chapter to describe experimentally how the materials are classified into different crystal classes and how the physical properties are characterized.

There is no denying that thinking comes naturally to human beings and that thinking is indeed central to what it means to be human. But what are thoughts? How does the brain--billions of tiny neurons and synapses--accomplish thought? In this compelling Very Short Introduction, Tim Bayne offers a compact but wide-ranging account of the nature of thought, drawing upon philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, and anthropology. Bayne touches on a stimulating array of topics. Does thinking occur in public or is it a purely private affair? Do young children and non-human animals think? Is human thought the same everywhere, or are there culturally specific modes of thought? What is the relationship between thought and language? What kind of responsibility do we have for our thoughts? In what ways can the process of thinking go wrong? Beginning with questions about what thought is and what distinguishes it from other kinds of mental states, he explores the logical structures of thought as well as the mechanisms that make thought possible. In sum, this book provides an engaging survey of what we know--and what we don't know--about one of the most central of human capacities.

WHETTING APPETITE FOR MORE
By Yehezkel Dror
This is an excellent short introduction to a complex subject, making me impatient for the author's 2014 book on the philosophy of mind. Main issues are well presented, with sophistication. Thus, the author recognizes the biases of experimental psychology resulting from too much reliance on American undergraduates as test subjects (p. 63), though he fails to apply this skepticism to the fashionable "2 systems" of reasoning dichotomy (p. 15), ignoring the important naturalistic decision making studies pioneered by Gary Klein and the impacts of professionalism on thought. The final chapter on "The Limits of Thought," however short, adds to the merits of the book by taking up seriously the likelihood of "cognitive closure" (p.103).
However there are a number of serious omissions. It remains unclear whether "thought" has to be explicit, or at least accessible to consciousness, or whether it includes essential sub-conscious processes. Depth-psychology is ignored. Related is lack of possibly significant distinctions between "thought," "pondering," "contemplation," "meditation" and "daydreaming." And creativity is not mentioned, though it is a critical modality of thought, combining subconscious incubation, deliberate mental search, and "leaps" of insight or production.
Presentation of "logic and probability theory" (the latter being in fact a branch of logic, namely modal logic) as the "best" of unbounded rationality (p. 18) is very narrow, ignoring many features of high-quality reasoning, such as field perspectives and innovativeness. This may well be related with the apparent trust of the author in the objectivity of morality (p. 100), which oversimplified "moral reasoning" (as in deontological logic) at the much too high cost of ignoring most moral philosophy and nearly all anthropology.
The book importantly takes up issues of cultural differences in thinking (but not in morality) (chapter 5), but ignores not less important individual and also gender differences.
Disturbing is the statement on lack of guidelines for generating required thoughts on the test question "why democracies tend not to wage war against other democracies" (pp. 93-4). Not only does this contradict suggestions by the author on upgrading doxastic voluntarism (pp. 96-7), but many not-too-demanding ways to stimulating thinking on the question can be suggested, such as reformulating perspectives by considering first "why are wars waged."
All these critical comments do not detract from the overall high quality of the book, which is highly recommended as an introductory and in some respect also advanced text on thought.

Needs more matter, less art.
By Amazon Customer
The book was a mix of rather interesting topics and rather boring topics. "Thought" turns out to be a very nebulous term, and the book covers everything from the science behind thoughts, to the philosophical model of how thoughts might work. Often, the science is rather lacking because, as the author explains, science knows remarkably little about thought. This leaves us with multiple chapters that are just not that interesting, as topics drift from neuroscience to Descartes thoughts on thought.

The philosophy, however, was just not interesting to me. It seemed like a lot of hand waving, a lot of "maybes", and at the end of the day, I don't feel like I learned very much from those sections of the book.

Unfortunately, the Further Reading section, often a strong point of Very Short Introductions, wasn't that useful either, citing mostly studies rather than other books about the topic.

I would give this book two stars, but the kindle edition was only $5, and I might have had my expectations set unreasonably high by amazon's description of the book, hence three stars.

Frederick Douglass recalled that slaves living along Chesapeake Bay longingly viewed sailing ships as "freedom’s swift-winged angels." In 1813 those angels appeared in the bay as British warships coming to punish the Americans for declaring war on the empire. Over many nights, hundreds of slaves paddled out to the warships seeking protection for their families from the ravages of slavery. The runaways pressured the British admirals into becoming liberators. As guides, pilots, sailors, and marines, the former slaves used their intimate knowledge of the countryside to transform the war. They enabled the British to escalate their onshore attacks and to capture and burn Washington, D.C. Tidewater masters had long dreaded their slaves as "an internal enemy." By mobilizing that enemy, the war ignited the deepest fears of Chesapeake slaveholders. It also alienated Virginians from a national government that had neglected their defense. Instead they turned south, their interests aligning more and more with their section. In 1820 Thomas Jefferson observed of sectionalism: "Like a firebell in the night [it] awakened and filled me with terror. I considered it at once the knell of the union." The notes of alarm in Jefferson's comment speak of the fear aroused by the recent crisis over slavery in his home state. His vision of a cataclysm to come proved prescient. Jefferson's startling observation registered a turn in the nation’s course, a pivot from the national purpose of the founding toward the threat of disunion. Drawn from new sources, Alan Taylor's riveting narrative re-creates the events that inspired black Virginians, haunted slaveholders, and set the nation on a new and dangerous course. 35 illustrations; 4 maps

From Booklist
Escape from slavery in the antebellum South evokes images of secretive flight on the Underground Railroad or bizarre efforts like that of “Box Brown,” who hid in a small shipping crate sent north. Taylor, a Pulitzer Prize–winning historian, teaches at the University of California, Davis. In this revealing and engrossing study, he illustrates that a great factor in the liberation of thousands of slaves was the policy and intervention of the British government and military. Taylor concentrates on the six decades between the American Revolution and the slave revolt of Nat Turner, and he focuses on the Chesapeake region of Virginia. The area is dotted with numerous rivers flowing to the bay, and here hundreds of slaves paddled out to British warships, especially during the War of 1812. British naval officers, through a combination of military practicality and, in some cases, antislavery sentiments, encouraged and facilitated their flight. This, of course, served to reinforce the slaveholders to view their slaves as “internal enemies.” This is a well-written and scrupulously researched examination of an important aspect of the struggle against American slavery. --Jay Freeman

Review
“An extraordinary story [told] in vivid prose and compelling detail. Taylor . . . has important things to say about slavery, about war, and about America.” (James Oakes - Washington Post)

“Alan Taylor has added a remarkable chapter to American history, showing how the actions of black Virginians in the War of 1812 remade the nation’s politics in ways that profoundly influenced the racialized lead-up to the Civil War. Taylor’s meticulous research and crystal-clear prose make this essential reading for anyone seeking new insights into a troubled American past.” (Elizabeth A. Fenn, author of Pox Americana)

“One of the greatest works of American history I have ever read. . . . This elegantly written and carefully researched volume shatters a good deal of received wisdom.” (Stephen L. Carter - Bloomberg View)

“A comprehensive, scholarly work, made accessible by Taylor’s skill as a storyteller.” (Kel Munger - Sacramento Bee)

Outstanding!
By Carole T. Goldberg
Alan Taylor is an exceptional story teller. This is a meticulously researched, beautifully written account of the little-known details in the nation's history of the crucial role that Black Virginians played in the War of 1812. Around this theme, with Taylor's wonderfully detailed and precise writing style, he creates an intricate tapestry of historical facts and events that bring to life a vital picture of the conflicted political atmosphere of Virginia and beyond, the day to day operations of the powerful leaders, and the intertwining of their lives with the status and existence of their slaves. The book was mesmerizing and I couldn't put it down.

Milestones along the Way to the Civil War
By Frank Bellizzi
As the author explains, "the internal enemy" was a phrase used by some Americans to speak of slaves, especially during times of war. In states like Virginia, with its many thousands of slaves, free people used this expression to speak of slave rebellion and sabotage, or at least their potential. The phrase could refer to runaways who took refuge with, provided information to, and sometimes even fought for the external enemy, the British.

The chronological bookends of the subtitle, 1772 and 1832, are significant. The first date refers to the Somerset decision in Great Britain, a legal ruling which had the effect of threatening the future of slavery in the British American colonies and thereby hastening the American Revolution (pp. 19-23). Following the uniquely-bloody slave rebellion of 1831 led by Nat Turner, in 1832 Thomas Jefferson Randolph, a grandson of Thomas Jefferson, introduced to the Virginia legislature a plan for the gradual abolition of slavery. Taylor suggests that the vote against that plan was a milestone in the road that led to the Civil War (pp. 414-17). Yet, almost all of the book focuses on 1812-15, the years of the War of 1812. During that war, it was common for slaves, especially from the Tidewater region of Virginia, to escape to British warships in the Chesapeake Bay.

In this book, Taylor is intent on showing that as the American Revolution heated up, events in Virginia were just as significant as better-known events in Massachusetts. He also wants to show that the activities of rebellious slaves made the War of 1812 significantly worse for Virginians, and for the American republic in general. For example, unlike British troops, slaves knew the terrain and hideouts on land. So they were able to serve as knowledgeable guides for the British in enemy territory. I don't know that he ever explicitly says it, but it seems Taylor at least implies that, really, "the internal enemy" was a phrase that most aptly described not slaves, but slavery itself.

Something else: Taylor implicitly confronts the notion that the War of 1812 resulted in almost nothing but good things for the new nation: National sovereignty was reinforced. The Battle of New Orleans became a celebrated event. Westward expansion took off in a new "era of good feelings." What Taylor suggests, however, is that the war left the American South even more invested in slavery. Therefore, this was the deepening of U.S. sectionalism.

Although he clearly knows and sometimes cites the secondary literature on his topic, as he tells this story Taylor routinely quotes primary sources. Overall? This book is a masterful achievement. It tells a number of fascinating stories while covering an important subject.

Must read for Virginians, African Americans, and America history scholars.
By Amazon Customer
This brilliantly researched history tells the true story of the War of 1812, and the heroism of former enslaved men. African Americans in the thousandsliberated themselves, and worked to liberate their families and friends through military service as Colonial Marines in the British services. The book also shows the lengths to which American slavers and leaders sought to malign the heroism of those marines and the honour of the British who fulfilled their commitments as liberators after the war.

Wastewater disposal by marine outfalls is proven and effective and is a reliable and cost effective solution with minimal environmental impacts. The design and siting of submarine outfalls is a complex task that relies on many disciplines including oceanography, civil and environmental engineering, marine biology, construction, economics, and public relations. Marine Wastewater Outfalls and Treatment Systems brings these disciplines together and outlines all tasks involved in the planning and design of a wastewater system involving a marine outfall. This book concerns the design of marine wastewater disposal systems: that is an ocean outfall plus treatment plant. All aspects of outfall design and planning are covered, including water quality design criteria, mathematical modelling of water quality and dilution, gathering required oceanographic data, appropriate wastewater treatment for marine discharges, construction materials for marine pipelines, forces on pipelines and outfall design, outfall hydraulics, outfall construction, tunnelled outfalls, operation and maintenance, monitoring, case studies are discussed and methods for gaining public acceptance for the project are presented. Finally, costs for many outfalls around the world are summarized and methods for estimating costs are given. This is the first book to consider all aspects of marine outfall planning and construction. The authors are all extensively involved with outfall schemes and aware of recent developments. The science and technology of all aspects of outfall discharges into coastal waters and estuaries of treated municipal or industrial wastewater has advanced considerably over the past few years. Marine Wastewater Outfalls and Treatment Systems provides an up to date and comprehensive summary of this rapidly developing area.

Review
"Avengers Infinity puts the god in the machine. Usually such an act would indicate a failing, but with Mr. Stern's story the actions of the Avengers makes sense and is upon reflection almost expected. The discussion, and it's refreshing to end a story without the use of violence, engrosses. The idea of life's diversity being a saving grace just tickles and gives an example of why the super-hero genre has successfully flooded the market for years." -- Ray Tate, comicsbulletin.com

"The fun thing about this particular book is that it really only has one key big time name in it ... Thor. The other members pulled in [are] some unique characters that you might not see working together ... Quasar, Moondragon, Photon and Tigra, as well as Starfox and Jack of Hearts. Stern works with each of these characters, giving them history and unique interactions. It showcases that they all have a different way of working off of one another, with the deep history he pulls from he shows excellent range." -- Justin Cantelo

Classic is the right word.
By Mauricio P A Macedo
Roger Stern is the definition of a classic Avengers writer. All the characters have their own voice, personality and clearly stated motivations, and they are actually moved foward within this four issue mini-series. If anything, it's too short given the scope of what the Avengers have to deal with here. The art by Sean Chen is also very good.
