About the Author

Robert L. Barker, PhD, is a consultant, advocate, and clinician in private practice. He is currently engaged in helping social agencies, advocacy groups, and political organizations raise funds, prepare grant proposals, and manage public relations campaigns. He also helps social workers prepare to give legal testimony in lawsuits. He was full professor since 1979 at the National Catholic School of Social Services, The Catholic University of America, in Washington, DC. He was also codirector of the Potomac Psychiatric Center in suburban Maryland, where he specialized in marital and family therapy, group therapy, and group work. For many years he also served as a consultant in designing, reviewing, and monitoring the development of social work licensing exams.

Dr. Barker has worked with various social advocacy groups and is particularly interested in international social welfare, homelessness, and research on effective use of social work personnel. He has taught social work skills in Europe and Latin America as well as in the United States. As part of a research project, he spent several months living as a homeless person in various U.S. cities. During his military service, he cofounded and led the Society of Air Force Social Workers.

Dr. Barker received his MSW from the University of Washington, Seattle, and his doctorate from Columbia University, New York. He founded and edited the Journal of Independent Social Work (later the Journal of Analytic Social Work) and has written more than 100 articles for professional journals, numerous articles for popular magazines and newspapers, several unpublished novels, and 23 published books.

His published books include Forensic Social Work: Legal Aspects of Professional Practice; Treating Couples in Crisis: Fundamentals and Practice in Marital Therapy; The Green-Eyed Marriage: Overcoming Jealous Relationships; Social Work in Private Practice: Milestones in Social Work and Social Welfare; The Business of Psychotherapy; Private Practice Administration for Therapists, Counselors and Social Workers; The Resource Book; Differential Use of Social Work Manpower (with Thomas L. Briggs); Educating Undergraduates for Professional Social Work Roles; Using Teams to Deliver Social Workers; and all six editions of The Social Work Dictionary.

A masterful achievement

Uncanny. How can such simple, methodical prose achieve suchpoetry? How can such bare-bones@descriptions and lists of nouns provoke such emotion? Kristof (a Hungarian who writes in French) writes like a dream--and begs comparison with Samuel Beckett and Vladimir Nabokov.
The Notebook is a black comedy of the war years written in the first person plural by inseparable twin boys. Brought up by a filthy, illiterate old woman, they learn life's most precious skills--to lie, steal, fight, beg and blackmail.
In The Proof, one twin flees across the border and the one left behind never recovers. He spins a heartbreaking tale of loneliness despite raising a family and pursuing an affair among totalitarian drabness.@The Third Lie contains two versions of the exile's return 50 years later. In the first half, the exile wanders around in search of his brother, and in the process, reinventing his own life. In the second half, the twin who stayed spins another heartrending version of the boys' past. Read in succession, the trilogy enchants with its facts and fables, its onion-layer structure, and its icy prose.

Beyond Postmodern: Kristof's "The Notebook"

"the Notebook" is one of the most powerful books I have ever read, and it is written the way books should be: easy to read, engaging, to the point, short, and thoroughly thought-provoking. When you are done with "The Notebook", it forces you to sit and ponder what you have just read. The book really twists the conventions of the first person narrative, so that even though the narrator(s) are thoroughly convincing, you are not sure what to believe. This convention also makes the narrators' often immoral and reprehensible acts believable and understandable. This only adds to the moral conundrum of this story, a cunundrum that is at the heart of war-time life.
I first read this in 1994; I'm extremely happy to see it finally in print again, and with the two sequels thrown in as well. A terrific and engaging novel!

Three Great Novels or One Wonderful Novel?

If taken one by one the three parts of this trilogy are good--well written, precise in a terryfying way, emotionally shocking (surely not something to read when in a depressive mood); but if you buy this and read it as one big novel in three parts it's simpy amazing. I can't tell you why, that's part of the fun. The only thing I can say: things aren't exactly what they seem. Outstanding literary achievement by this expatriate Hungarian writer, one of the most facinating literary voices in Central Europe with Thomas Bernhard. A must-read if there ever was one!

Martin Luther (1483, 1546) was a German monk, a theologian and church reformer, he is considered to be the founder of Protestantism. Luther was a professor of Bible at the University of Wittenberg when he posted his famous 95 Theses (1517). In addition to writing many books, Luther translated the Bible into German. Luther believed that salvation was only by faith in Jesus, unmediated by the church. He challenged papal authority by emphasing the Bible as the only source of religious authority and believed the church to be a priesthood of all believers.These ideas helped to inspire the Protestant Reformation and changed the course of Western civilization. This book is a fine exposition of the central issues of Lutheran doctrine, and reveals three of the major pivot points of the Protestant Reformation: freedom from enforced piety, rejection of hierarchical polity, and rejection of non-Biblical sacraments. In addition, the translation is clear and straightforward while retaining the delightful spirit of Luther's German, shifting effortlessly between the polemical and the comic.
This is a must-read for anyone who calls herself a Lutheran.

About the Author
Merry Wiesner-Hanks is a Distinguished Professor and Chair of the History Department at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. She is the long-time senior editor of the Sixteenth Century Journal, one of three editors of the Journal of Global History, and the editor-in-chief of the forthcoming multi-volume Cambridge World History. She is the author or editor of twenty books and many articles that have appeared in English, German, Italian, Spanish, Greek, French, Chinese, Turkish and Korean. These include Early Modern Europe, 1450-1789, 2nd edition (Cambridge, 2013), Women and Gender in Early Modern Europe, 3rd edition (Cambridge, 2008), Christianity and Sexuality in the Early Modern World: Regulating Desire, Reforming Practice, 2nd edition (2010) and Gender in History: Global Perspectives, 2nd edition (2010). Her research has been supported by grants from the Fulbright and Guggenheim Foundations, among others. She has also written a number of innovative source books for use in the college classroom, including Discovering the Global Past: A Look at the Evidence, 4th edition (2011), a book for young adults, An Age of Voyages, 1350-1600 (2005), and a book for general readers, The Marvelous Hairy Girls: The Gonzales Sisters and their Worlds (2009).

In nature, the roots of most plants are colonized by symbiotic fungi forming mycorrhizas, which play a critical role in the capture of nutrients from the soil, and therefore in plant nutrition.
Thirteen years have elapsed since the publication of the first edition of Mycorrhizal Symbiosis, the book that has generally been acclaimed as the most definitive work on this fascinating topic.
The second edition, co-authored by Professor Sally Smith and Professor David Read, retains the same format, but has been completely rewritten to cover the significant advances over this period.

The standard reference for mycorrhizal research

This book is a standard reference in the field of mycorrhizal research. Since the field is growing rapidly, it is somewhat dated, but still excellent, especially for a life scientist trying to learn about the different types of mycorrhizae. This is a technical book, and parts of it require some knowledge of plant physiology, molecular biology, ecology, or, of course, mycology. Still, it is the book I send people to when they need a reference, and my copy is getting ragged with use.
