Best book ever!

I had read that this book converted over a million people in its day. I found it a little tedious in the beginning, but further into the book, it hit home with me as no other book ever has. It is difficult to describe how clearly this book made me see my faults, and how it drove me to amend my life. The specific practical advice was as timely today as it was in the 1500's. I cannot recommend this book highly enough, for anyone who is not afraid to take a good look at himself.

Food for spiritual thought

The first part of the book speaks to unrepentant sinners. Fr. Louis puts forth compelling arguments on why you should fear hell, why you should repent, and why you should repent NOW. The second part of the book offers advice to the repentant sinner--how to avoid the ever-present temptation to commit mortal and venial sins. One theme I enjoyed throughout the book was his depiction of God's dual nature: His outstretched arm and firm hand; His justice and His mercy. The repentant sinner will receive mercy, but for the unrepentant... Fr. Louis uses extensive Biblical citations and quotes from the Church Doctors to support his arguments. These references are always on point and frequently beautiful and moving. So, besides providing instruction on how to better your character, the book will deepen your understanding of the Bible and the roots of Catholic theology. Fr. Louis quotes St. Augustine extensively. For me, his "Confessions" had a much greater impact, maybe because it was so personal and so human a story. "The Sinner's Guide" is not a personal conversion story; it is more of an instruction manual. Good reading nonetheless!

AN EXCELLENT COLLECTION OF WRITING BY AN AMERICAN PRAGMATIST PHILOSOPHER

George Herbert Mead (1863–1931) was an American philosopher, sociologist and psychologist, primarily affiliated with the University of Chicago, where he was one of several distinguished pragmatists. He is regarded as one of the founders of social psychology.

The editor wrote in the Preface to this 1964 collection, “In the summer of 1962, while preparing a study of Mead’s philosophy for publication… in commemoration of the centennial of his birth, discovered that, although five posthumously published based on his lectures and notes presented his thought and were in print, his own publications… had never been collected and were scattered in journals and out-of-print books… The present volume makes available for the first time a selective collection of Mead’s published essays, touching on every major feature of his thought.”

Mead states, “In the social world we must recognize the working hypothesis as the form into which all theories must be cast as completely as in the natural sciences. The highest criterion that we can present is that the hypothesis shall WORK in the complex of forces into which we introduce it. We can never set up a detailed statement of the conditions that are to be ultimately attained. What we have is a method and a control in application, not an ideal to work toward.” (Pg. 3)

He says, “The religious consciousness is preeminently one that recognizes in life a fundamental problem, while it clings to the reality of the great representative objects of conduct which the conflict has abstracted and set before us. In fact, it is allowable to define the religious object as one which, while transcending through its universality the particular situations of life, still is felt to be representative of its meaning and value.” (Pg. 23)

He points out, “The result of the development of our sciences has been that their problems are no longer within the immediate experience of the student, nor are they always statable in terms of that experience. He has to be introduced to the science before he can reach the source of interest, i.e., problems which are his own and which he wants to solve by the process of his own thinking.” (Pg. 63)

He argues, “The loss to the community from the elimination of the intellectual phase of moral conduct it would be difficult to overestimate and this loss is unavoidable as long as the interpretation of conduct lies outside the immediate experience, as long as we must refer to a moral order without, to intellectually present the morality of conduct… But not only does an external moral ideal rob immediate moral conduct of its most important values, but it robs human nature of the more profound solace which can come to those who suffer----the knowledge that the loss and the suffering, with its subjective poignancy, has served to evaluate conduct, to determine what is and what is not worthwhile.” (Pg. 92-93)

He suggests, “I have thought to indicate that the process of schooling in its barest form cannot be sufficiently studied by a scientific psychology unless that psychology is social, i.e., unless it recognizes that the processes of acquiring knowledge, of giving attention, of evaluating in emotional terms must be studied in their relation to selves in a social consciousness. So far as education is concerned, the child does not become social by learning. He must be social in order to learn.” (Pg. 122)

He observes, “Any gesture by which the individual can himself be affected as others are affected, and which therefore tends to call out in him a response as it would call it out in another, will serve as a mechanism for the construction of a self. That, however, a consciousness of a self as an object would ever have arisen in man if he had not had the mechanism of talking to himself, I think there is every reason to doubt. If this statement is correct the objective self of human consciousness is the merging of one’s responses with the social stimulation by which he affects himself. The ‘me’ is a man’s reply to his own talk. Such a ‘me’ is not then an early formation, which is then projected and ejected into the bodies of other people to give them the breadth of human life. It is rather an importation from the field of social objects into an amorphous, unorganized field of what we call inner experience. Through the organization of this object, the self, this material is itself organized and brought under the control of the individual in the form of so-called self-consciousness.” (Pg. 140)

He contends, “There is an ambiguity in the word ‘consciousness.’ … There is another field, that of self-consciousness, to which I am not as yet referring. There is a common character which in varying degree belongs to all of these contents, that is, that these contents could not appear at all, or exactly as they do appear, in the experiences of any other organism. They are in this sense private, though this privacy does not imply necessarily anything more than difference of access or of perspective on the part of the different organisms. If we take the pragmatic attitude…consciousness in the first sense, that of awareness, would disappear from immediate experience, while the world that is there would be a world that would exist for the organism, when the organism marked or plotted or… canalized its environment in terms of its future conduct.” (Pg. 271-272)

He asserts, “It is hardly necessary to point out that John Dewey’s philosophy, with its insistence upon the statement of the end in the terms of the means, is the developmental method of the implicit intelligence in the mind of the American community. And for such an implicit intelligence there is no other test of moral and intellectual hypotheses except that they work. In the profoundest sense John Dewey is the philosopher of America.” (Pg. 391)

Mead is far less well-known than, say, John Dewey, William James, or Charles Peirce; but this collection of writings is an excellent “introduction” to his thought.

Helpful Material

I found the introductory remarks by Professor Reck more intriguing than the body of the book. His comments are somewhat motivating for scholarly work. In describing the process of editing the material, he sets a certain tone that is appealing.
In the writings of Mead one finds seeds of liberalism being sown. Mead takes simple concepts and makes them sound overly complex. In this particular collection of his work, there is more filler than substance in many cases. The bibliography, however is useful in that it provides a means of tracing sources.

I'm so grateful for your ministry. Studying your books, interacting with Habitudes, and restructuring our ministry priorities (around leadership) has produced kingdom fruitfulness here in NYC. This past year we had more students come to faith in Christ than we've had in the last 11 years. Our student leaders are winning prestigious awards. About the Author
Dr. Tim Elmore is the founder and president of Growing Leaders, an Atlanta-based nonprofit organization created to develop emerging leaders. Since founding Growing Leaders, Elmore has spoken to more than 300,000 students, faculty, and staff on hundreds of campuses across the country, including the University of Oklahoma, Stanford University, Duke University, Rutgers University, the University of South Carolina, and Louisiana State University. When you combine a memorable visual image with the challenge of a new leadership habit you create something power: a habitude. That's exactly what Dr. Tim Elmore does in his series of exceptional books called "Habitudes."

Our minds store information in picture format. For example, when you read "elephant," you don't think of the letters e-l-e-p-h-a-n-t, but you think of a huge, floppy-eared, tusk-bearing, mammal on the African savannah. So combining visual images (a right-brained exercise) with life-changing data (a left-brained activity) creates a concept that really sticks with us.

For each one of the 13 habitudes in this book, an image is first presented (for instance, a flood-ravaged home, with the brown swirling water flowing through the front door). Then add to this image some powerful insights from Dr. Elmore about a leader's responsibility to keep everyone's energies inside the banks for maximum effectiveness. If a leader doesn't keep the river's flow within the banks where it can do some good, the flood of misguided energies can lead to devastation.

Each habitude includes some workspace to help you work through the concepts presented with each image. The pictures create a great "hook" for the concepts to hang in your mind, and the follow-up exercises in each chapter help make the concepts applicable to your unique circumstances.

Each chapter is fairly short, but as the cliche goes, "A picture is worth a thousand words," so expect each habitude to teach you a lot without using a lot of written words.

This is a great resource for anyone wanting to improve his or her leadership capabilities. But it would be especially useful for young leaders-in-training in a mentoring/protege role.

As a Student Athlete, after reading this book for the first time, my entire world view changed. As a result, the selfish and self-deceptive veil over my eyes began to fade away.
Upon reading the first paragraph, I was drawn in like a moth whose primary focus is to get closer and closer to paradise. The affluent images, stimulating summaries and inspiring stories created an atmosphere that captivated my attention and allowed me to contextualize the diverse concepts. Each picture carried a thousand words, as the cliché goes and brought the concepts to life. The stories challenged my core values and better equipped me for life and various leadership roles. Habitude enabled me to tap into my inner being and prompted me to maximize my physical, emotional, mental and spiritual potential. This book has taught me fundamental principles of life, for instance, it takes selflessness and sacrifice to make relationships work. And as the Apostle Paul once said, “We will be successful when we lead or serve for the glory of God and for the good of our fellow companions.”
Some books are read by many because they are significant to life, some books are significant to life because they are read by many.
Thank you Dr. Elmore for sharing your wisdom and knowledge, your ideas have definitely strengthen my Christian walk and I matured significantly. As an Author, you targeted the need of your audience effectively. God bless you.

life lessons as easy as it gets

Dr. Tim Elmore does an amazing job pointing out crucial ideas and topics in a very easy-to-read format. Each lesson focuses on an image that illustrates some point of leadership.

What attracts me most to the Habitudes series is the fact that Elmore focuses mainly on integrity, which is something that the world definitely needs more of.

I recommend this book to anyone and ESPECIALLY if you are leading some sort of group (business group, church group, worship team, college bible study, youth group). It says a lot of things that people need to hear.

About the Author
Doctor, Colonel Ronald Harvell is a veteran of 30 years of ministry. He is currently an Air Force Chaplain responsible for the spiritual care for all Air Force personnel in the Middle-East. He and his wife Marsha have been married for 30 years. They joined together in the authorship of this book. Marsha is authoring her second book. She is an international speaker making presentations on marriage and the Bible in 9 different countries. She has been praying daily for her family for over 30 years.

Amazing book to become prayer warrior

The book "The Watchman on the Wall" is an amazing book. As soon as i started reading the book, God showed me to pray continually for his kingdom. He made me as a prayer warrior to list all the people i deal with and pray for them regularly for his kingdom. By His grace i am praying now from the day i started reading this book a week ago. Thanks again for this wonderful book, may god bless the authors of this book and use them for his kingdom.

Be a world changing prayer warrior for your family!

WOW! The Watchman on the Wall is the next step after Jesus Calling. The Lord brings us near to Himself, we experience His presence, and then He calls us to faithfully pray for our loved ones. This book is excellent. The Bible teaching and the prayers that come from God Word are great.

love and be taught by this family

I am blessed by the LORD to know, love and be taught by this family. I can testify firsthand to their careful and accurate handling of God's Word. I've been reading the Watchman on the Wall devotional since the day it came out and into my hands. I love that they take us through entire books of the Bible and show us how to apply Scripture to our daily lives. Praying Scripture over myself and my family has been very powerful and has deepened my relationship with my Savior. Today's message (Jan 21) truly hit home, particularly because of where we're currently stationed in the Middle East. "He (Jesus) chose to make His triumphal entry into the most important week in the history of the world on an untamed donkey. Twice Luke recorded that the LORD needed that donkey. The moment that donkey's Creator sat on it, the untamed beast maneuvered up and down steep paths...performing brilliantly because it was under the control of Christ. That donkey is the picture of your life. Before Jesus, you were an untamed beast, a wild donkey of a person, but Jesus needed you....He chose and tamed you." p.24 in the book, referencing Luke 19. The thought that the minute our Creator calls us, no matter what our state and condition, we can be used by Him to accomplish what He wants and needs to do sends me on my face praising and glorifying our Lord. This thought encourages me to pray for more than just myself and my family, but our nation, and indeed our world. Thank you Ron and Marsha for being obedient bond-slaves and sharing this devotional with us all. June Lamb
