New Christmas Story!

Vickie has written a cute, stand-alone, Christmas story using the characters from her series.

Two children,Amy and James and their cat, Kiwi; must help a star rescue a fairy from a witch and help them return to Santa before Christmas!

Their adventure flows easily and will keep all children enthralled!

I love how she shares moral values so smoothly. Reminds all the true reason for this most precious season.

I enjoyed the descriptions of Cat City and Santa's Grotto.

Such a wonderfully vivid imagination!

Kiwi continues his adventures with Amy and James

This latest installment to the Kiwi Series is a Christmas story in which Kiwi, Amy, and James help a star rescue his fairy friend from the clutches of an evil witch who is holding her captive in a haunted house. Their adventures take them back to Cat City to enlist the help of old friends such as Siam and Inspector Furrball. In an enchanting twist, they wind up meeting Father Christmas and traveling with him around the world and eventually to his magical realm of Snowfell.

Kiwi's Christmas Tail is a delightful book filled with magical adventures and great teachable moments to entertain and delight your children. Great reading for the entire family. Again, the Kiwi series of adventures delivers magic and love. Very enjoyable.

Love the Christmas Story

KIWI'S CHRISTMAS TAIL by Vickie Johnstone

Kiwi books are inspired by a fluffy black cat that Vicki Johnstone once owned and now is on the other side. The Christmas tail is about a Christmas Fairy that was stolen by a green witch with her toad and a Star that was hiding in a store till Amy and James' mother bought it and brought him home. The star and fairy need to get back to Father Christmas before Christmas Eve or it will take another year before they get another chance to get home. Read the book and go on an adventure like you wouldn't believe.

You will have to read this lively story about how Kiwi and the children aid the Christmas Fairy and Star home. Magic is involved but check out what the children will be offered when they get to Father Christmas' home. This a really fun, exciting, unexpected adventure that could only be written with Kiwi as the main character. The Kiwi series is one of my favorite series of children's books.

About the Author
Efthimios Kaxiras received his PhD in theoretical physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and worked as a Postdoctotal Fellow at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Laboratory in Yorktown Heights. He joined Harvard University in 1991 where he is currently a Professor of Physics and the Gordon McKay Professor of Applied Physics. He has worked on theoretical modeling of the properties of solids, including their surfaces and defects; he has published over 130 articles in refereed journals, including several invited review articles and book chapters. He has also presented his work in international conferences and workshops throughout the world, through more than 70 invited lectures. He has co-organized a number of scientific meetings and co-edited 3 volumes of conference proceedings. He is a member of the American Physical Society, the American Chemical Society, the Materials Research Society, Sigma Xi - Scientific Research Society, and a Chartered Member of the Institute of Physics (London).

Splendid work

As analytical and synthesis techniques become more powerful, it is now possible to examine and fine-tune materials at the atomic scale. Likewise, continual advances in computer hardware and software have allowed more people the ability to model processes and materials at the atomic scale. Consequently, there is a growing need for good textbooks on the atomic and electronic structure of solids. Alas, most of the relevant textbooks suffer from one or more of the following drawbacks:

1. There is too much math and physics for most people. In other words, there are too many equations, proofs, and derivations. This usually manifests itself in sections on quantum mechanics and ab initio modeling.

2. The texts become less an educational tool and more a showcase of the latest and greatest achievements by the author(s). This negative can often be spotted by looking at the book's table of contents. If each chapter is written by a separate author, then you can be sure that the text often end up as extended reviews of that author(s)' publications.

3. Not enough coverage of background information. The study of solids at the atomic level is being approached by multiple fields that usually have NO interdisciplinary overlap in education institutions. Examples include geology, electrical engineering, biochemistry, tribology, materials science, etc... Therefore, a book to serve members from all these fields should have a lot of background information in topics such as thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, crystal structure and defects, group theory, etc...

4. Lack of pictorial representation. A picture is worth a thousand words; and even more so if you are trying to understand microscopic phenomena such as bonding, dislocation motion, etc... Too many textbooks have too few, well-explained pictures.

This book by Kaxiras does not suffer from any of these drawbacks. I consider it the best book so far on this topic.

First, it is written entirely by one author, yet I could not find a single reference to any of his publications within the book. There was absolutely no feeling that this book was trying to review someone's work, or some body of work. Instead, the book read like a well writtent textbook.

Second, the topics are written for a general audience, with enough background information that undergraduate science and engineering students can understand it. Specifically, the first chapter of the book starts with the Periodic Table of Elements and explains why different elements form different types of solids. This is extremely valuable information for anyone who has never had a course in materials science, which probably means most chemists, electrical engineers, biologists, etc...

3. Lots and lots of review literature is cited- WITH explanations of why it was suggested to the reader for further reading.

4. I counted 1 picture per every 2 pages. That is astounding. Even though the pictures were B&W, I understand all of them. Every one had axes labeled, a legend, a descriptive header, etc...

5. Thorough and basic explanation of band structures. Too many texts spend too much time explaining the different methods of obtaining band structures (LMTO, LAPW, pseudopotential + plane waves, APW, PAW, etc...). This book instead provided a whole chapter on understanding a band diagram, correlating a band diagram with the geometry of a material, and the physical origins of band structures. This is prerequisite knowledge before any further attempts to understand the electronic properties of materials.

6. Justification of each approximation, along with accompanying successes and failures. This book examined the mean-field, Born-Oppenheimer, frozen-phonon, pseudopotential, and other approximations commonly used in atomic-scale modeling, and provided thorough, well-organized justification of each one, along with a listing of their successes and failures.

In all, I recommend this book to anyone as a prerequisite reading before attempting to do research on the atomic or electronic structure of materials.

It's because of books like these that I've never had to take a formal quantum mechanics course to understand electronic structure theory. Hands down, this is one of the best theoretical solid state physics books.

A wonderful experience to read

Well I just finished this ebook and I feel great. This is the follow up book to the author's free book Me! Me! Me! Which Inner Self is Running Your Life?, which describes the theory of selves. Essentially the theory of selves posit that there are several "selves" that make up our whole, and each of these selves have a particular set of characteristics. There is the fun loving "party animal", the flexible and conforming "chameleon" , the evaluative "judge" and so forth. We all differ in how these selves are exhibited in us.

The fascinating thing about this book isn't just the joy of the discovery of the selves, their characteristics, strengths/weaknesses and so on. But once you begin to "own" these parts of yourself you begin to come alive. It is really an enjoyable process. Once we begin to own these selves, it allows us to harness them to appropriate levels so that they are in essence being demonstrated in healthy magnitudes. This leads to greater harmony and greater self control, as well as greater self awareness.

The book describes 44 different selves, and also points out opposite selves for each one. The descriptions are detailed, interesting, and succinct. Never do you feel the descriptions are too verbose. It is also 53 pages long and I have to be honest it leaves you wanting more. That said I am really happy that I got to read this book. It was not only informational and illuminating, but a lot of fun.

Good read if you like technology

I have yet to find a textbook I liked, but this one isn't half bad. This is probably the best one I've read after over 100 credits. I do have a bias that I really like technology and find it interesting. If you like computers this textbook can be interesting, if not you picked the wrong class.

The real world examples are great and really help you understand how the topics connect to today's business world. This book is also very current with an entire chapter dedicated to Facebook and another for Google. And if you ever wanted to know how the internet really works, you'll actually understand after reading this book. I found the explanations of technology to be very easy to understand as well. The biggest strength of this book is the style of writing. It's not overly wordy or complicated (to me), just written in English as though the author was having a conversation.

I'm not sure what book the other reviewer was reading but I seem to have had the exact opposite experience. There are lots of subtitles, bold words, and vocabulary definitions. There are also review questions at the end of each chapter (which is where my professor got most of his test questions). I also have the black and white version, and the pages are made of standard book paper and are not at all shiny, which is great.

Only read excerpts, but looks really promising!

I stumbled across an online version of this book, which allowed you to print off individual chapters, when I was trying to find something to help my non-techie manager understand terms like "application servers" and "web services" and all of that. It's hard to judge as I'm a techie, but it seemed to present the material in a straight-forward (if not at times perhaps a touch TOO simplistic) manner.

I read another section of a chapter about web site vulnerabilities, as our manager was having a hard time understanding why there might be security aspects with our code -- his logical assumption from a non-technical background was that you had to tell the system what you wanted to do, so you didn't have a lot of options.

I've not read the whole book, but the sections I went looking for seemed like they would be useful in presenting information to a manager who wanted to learn more, but wasn't sure where to look. There are sections on social media, distributed applications, e-commerce systems, what exactly programmers do when they 'write software', what open source software is and why it is, databases, cloud computing, and more.

So worth a look, in terms of content, I think.

Essential reading

I've read several chapters of this book and it does a great job of explaining information systems for anyone who might not have a strong IT background. The book uses relevant real-world examples that students will finding interesting (i.e. the chapters on Netflix and Facebook). As a current MBA student, this book has helped me tremendously to tie together aspects of IT and management that will undoubtedly play a role in my future career. I also appreciate that it is written in a very engaging style that keeps you entertained while learning. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to better understand the impact of information systems / information technology in the real world.

A Great Novelist

Sartre was a great novelist and NAUSEA is his masterpiece. As a philosopher, he was a major influence, but his vision was dubious, a "romantic rationalism", as Iris Murdoch characterized it.

He does better fleshing out his ideas into fiction, especially in this modern classic (Penguin applies the term properly this time). I can't imagine any reader beginning this novel and not reading to the end. (Incidentally, the black woman singing the recording of "Some of These Days" is a figment of Sartre's imagination, unless he thought Sophie Tucker was black.)

The translation by Robert Baldick is a vast improvement over the earlier version by Lloyd Alexander (which contains the famous mistranslation of the phrase "foret des vergers" as well a few other howlers).

Too bad Sartre gave up the novel after his ROADS TO FREEDOM series, the first two volumes of which are quite good, if not the equal of NAUSEA. Of his later works only WORDS really rises to greatness, though his study of Baudelaire is worth looking up.

When people ask me about this book I don't really know how to explain it. I enjoyed it. There's many great paragraphs I'd like to share with others but they would be very confused
